i love your questions, sharky, but i can't help but take them seriously. does it make me a bad person?
.... so yeah, toothpicks would be incredibly impractical. it seems to me before age 4 months, children won't accept any solid food so the question is moot. they just use some form of nipple, or some talented babies use cups (with assistance).
after four months, spoons are pretty universal. small spoons, coated spoons... there are quite a few variations. when the child starts feeding himself (around 10-18 months), they have short, thick utensils to help them learn even when they aren't too coordinated.
gerber has this one "dipping utensil" which is basically a thick plastic rod with ridges to help keep the food from sliding off. this seems like a chopstick knockoff to me. other than spoons, i suspect the chinese might use a single, thicker, possibly shorter chopstick type thing, for dipping.
aren't there any chinese people on here who can give a thorough, intelligent answer?

Small spoons and if you can get them the coated ones usually found in the baby section...no forks baby's are unpredictable movers and forks would be dangerous.

No, to answer your questions, we Chinese people are normal like everyone else and use little spoons. What a dumb question.

What a question to ask! Maybe you need to visit a maternity ward and see new born babies, whether Europeans, Chinese, Indians or whatever their race/religions/culture/lifestyle ... Babies are beautiful vulnerable little persons who need to be loved and nurtured by us all regardless what diet they will be fed in later years.

Very funny - and interesting question. I'm sure they don't use toothpicks, but it does make sense.
