thank you all for your answers , except charcoal, he doesn't hear the animal he see's the animal and it isn't every animal he reacts to just dogs and cats.
he now see's a dog or cat he jumps to the toy box grabs a toy and shakes the **** out of it...growling the whole time.
I had someone tell me that he takes it as an afront that the dog didn't introduce himself you know doggie style sniff the butt...and he thinks Z is an alpha dog demanding such niceties..
who knows I have a weird pup but I love him any way.

animals don't see tv the same way we do because of the way the pictures are put together in the process of filming. Think of how a computer screen or tv looks when it is on tv (most easily noticble in the news, not on pre-recorded programs where they fix this) and it has those black bars running across it. This is more the way the dog sees tv--- we can see some things on that computer screen, but it is difficult.
The sense of hearing is accute in a dog, so it probably hears the sounds of the animal.

Of course a dog can see TV, provided it's not blind! They just don't see the same way humans do, and they can't see color the way we do. When a dog tries to "attack" an animal on TV, it is because their hunting instinct kicks in when it sees the movement on the screen.
A dog' sight is the most import of its senses. It's not as developed as in humans, since the dog can barely differentiate different colors (which it confuses in a gamma of sepia hues), or their depth, although their field of vision is much broader than ours and has great reflex toward movement; which is where its skill is when sighting its prey when hunting.
The dog's field of vision is very wide: from 200 to 270 degrees (depending on the size of its snout and the skull's shape) compared to man's 160 degrees. Their eyes are very similar to a human's, but the ocular globes have less movement. A human's sight is binocular and forward, while a dog's are laterally. Humans have much better sight than dogs, especially when it comes to small objects, yet dogs, because of the location of their eyes can detect a movement behind them. Dogs are farsighted and detect moving objects much more than immobile ones. On the other hand, they have excellent night vision since they have a special membrane that allows them to receive light.

Oh, they can totally see the TV! Somebody was either lying or misinformed. My friend's cat would turn on her stereo and bob his head. My grandmother's cat would ring the doorbell when she was ready to come back into the house. These are cats, yes, but the dog stories run rampant, too! Yeah, Ziggy can see. My old Pekinese used to whimper when a dog commercial came on and lay his hands on his front paws.

I think "they" are wrong. My cat sits on a foot stool in front of the tv. You can see her watch the action across the screen with her head turning back and forth with the action. I'm sure Ziggy is probably enjoying your shows just as much as you.
Could you change it to Animal Planet for him? He still hasn't mastered the remote but he's secretly working on it.

I have a cocker that will turn the TV off if we watch animal planet. All the dogs that I have ever had would bark at the TV with other pets. Had a pug that would sit and watch TV.

I've never heard that dogs couldn't see the tv, that's a new one on me. In fact, seems like I've seen similar antics to the one you've described on America's Funniest Home Videos.

they do! My cousins weimeraimer (spelling?) sits and watches TV. So do my cats. I think they see the movement and lights and that's why they watch.
My tuxedo cat, though, particularly likes a show on animal planet about baby tigers. very cute.

My dog can see tv. He loves it, until a cat comes on, then he barks to no end.
