Private/Instrument- self study with CFI guidance
Commercial ASEL/AMEL- 141 school
CFI/CFII/MEI- self study with CFI guidance
ATP/CRJ Type Rating- FAA Approved airline training
When I studied for the written/computerized exams, I mostly used Gleim to prep. However, the Gleim books only prepare you for the exams by rote learning. I would use a Private/Inst./Comm Manual to go along with the exam prep books.

Gleim produces a nice, easily used CFI renewal course. My experience with said CFI renewal leads me to recommend Gleim. I had need to telephone the company and am happy to report that they answer quickly and offer very friendly service.
