Because mankind wants to understand. God is beyond comprehension, but our finite minds want to put a limit on everything. Intellectualizing is essentially, putting a limit on God and He is limitless. You are correct, by intellectualizing God we are putting ourselves on His level which is self-righteous. We have to be so careful, because He is God our creator, and we are His created.

Because everyone KNOWS they are lacking by their own merits and thereby seek out ways to lessen this.

But the strange reason and most accurate answer is: because we are just like God. There is a reason Lucifer wanted His throne and a reason why Adam and Eve wanted to "be as gods".

We were made in His image so we share the same attributes in many respects. We want to be loved, worshipped, and adored. Realizing however that the pecking order starts with God at the top is where we miss the boat and attempt to rationalize our shortcommings as something we can also fix.

Voltaire once said "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him". For many an intellectual, the concept of 'God' as-is is well, unacceptable. But everyone needs a 'god', even atheists, so intellectualizing god is a way to 'invent' God b/c everyone needs one whether or not you have one.

trying to be self-righteous is what everyone should aim to be.. we do not claim to be God, but having an aim and trying to achieve it is a good thing, don't you think?

God never said being good moral is enough, but neither does he say go all out and break loose...

... we are all sinners.... so i'm not exactly sure about your phrasing... but i do recognize that there are folk that intellectualize God, try to justify, and rationalize there behavior... thats pretty much a "human"thing to do.... their attitude being; "what i believe is right ...IS RIGHT !".... personaly thats how i feel about people who believe in abortion[ that includes people who believe in the "right to choose"] but i have my own sins for sure... i only hope and ask that God be fair w/ me and i wont be too surprised on judgement day

Have this in mind, sinners like me have faith in God, trust in God, as no man has a good judgment.

If God is perfect, then his logic and reasoning abilities are also perfect.

When I read your question, it seems that you don't believe your god is intelligent. That is sad.

It doesn't hurt God in any way when we expect God to be reasonable and intelligent. Just because some of his followers are stupid doesn't mean that God is stupid.

Self-deception by ignorance. It is like showing a lantern to the Sun.

Because they're "sinners", as you have already stated.

But if we want to following the Bible, then we all are sinners.

Luke 9:57 to 62

The Cost of Following Jesus
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

He said to another man, "Follow me."
But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good bye to my family."

Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
