I have just gotten my first cat since childhood, and I don't know how often to change it.

get the scoopable litter, it lasts longer and it smells less, scoop it once a day. keep it at least 2in thick,, then like once a month dump the whole thing out, clean it, and put fresh scoopable in.

The scoopable kind is a mess!! It's a fine-grain litter and the cats get it stuck in their paws, thus tracking it all over the house.

The best litter I've ever used was the more expensive "crystal" kind. This stuff was bad a-ss!! :) I scooped out the solid poo everyday or two, but the litter only had to be changed once every 3 or 4 weeks ... depending on how big your cat is, or if you have more than one.

Me and the kids were amazed by this stuff. You could put your face right up to close to it (yes, we tried it :) and not smell a thing. The crystals absorb the urine and actually turn yellow. But you can't smell them.

In the end, we ended up saving lots of money, and frustration, by buying the more expensive stuff.

They also sell this new stuff that's made of the same "gel beads" that are used in baby diapers. They have it at Pet Smart ... not sure if Wal Mart has picked it up yet.

I use the scoopable kind, and if possible, I clean it every evening. It doesn't take but a minute. If I am super busy, I get it the next morning before I leave for work. You want to keep your box clean, as most cats will not use a dirty litter box. To keep the smell down, sprinkle a little baking soda in with the litter, it works and it's harmless

With two cats using the same box, I use scoopable litter and sift it out every morning. You can add more litter as your removing clumps. As long as I clean every day, I don't dump it all and start over more than once every six weeks or so. Nobody smells cat in my home

You scoop out the waste daily. I would say about every 2-3 weeks, empty the whole thing, let it soak in soapy water. I always have had an extra litter box to use while the other one is being cleaned.

I change my cat's pan (he's a senior adult, and large) about once a week (5-7 days depending on quality of litter). When the pan gets soaked with urine, basically and the litter doesn't dry - plus begins to get smelly, then it's time to change - and that's about in one week, for one large adult cat.More cats need more frequent changes or separate boxes.

Clean the litter box out EVERY DAY of poop and hard pee. Every few days you can add more litter but ONCE A WEEK the entire pan should be emptied and replaced with fresh litter.

TRY THE CLUMPING KIND IT IS EASY TO USE

We use the clumping litter. We scoop it out daily, and add extra litter once a week. About twice monthly we dump it all out and put in a totally fresh batch. We have two cats and it works very well for us.

I change mine every other day and I have two cats. My litter box is the biggest you can by with a filtered vent on top. If you don't have a cover you might want to do it everyday

scoop out the poop every day. If you don't have scoopable litter then I suggest changing the litter twice a week - and completely hose down the little box once a week.

if you do have scoopable litter, then scoop it out at least once a day (or as soon as you see the mess) and switch out the litter maybe once every couple of weeks.
