My boyfriend has mildly bad asthma, and he is allergic to cats, he has a cat, and i have a cat. When we are at his house or mine, he coughs sometimes, and he says it's nothing. He doesn't carry his inhaler with him all the time, and i am afraid that one day, his asthma will act up and he will not have his inhaler. I have told him I am scared, and worry about him, but he acts as if it's nothing. How can i convince him that i am really worried about it, and it's important to carry his inhaler with him?

I have asthma too, because of my husband's cat. I hate to say it, but he should consider not having cats in the future.

The coughing is a sign of asthma, and just because he has it (the cats would certainly trigger it) doesn't mean he is going to have a debilitating attack. My "asthma attacks" consist of coughing. Sometimes after a long workout, I might wheeze.

He should talk to his doctor about how to best manage it... but he's not going to sieze up and stop breathing on you...having a rescue inhaler available might ease your fears, so you should ask to have on in your house for him.

The best thing to do is convince your boyfriend to see his physician and if he will agree, go with him. Ask the physician specific questions regarding asthma and treatment. This way, your boyfriend will hear information from the doctor, and you will also know what the doctor suggests and be able to encourage him to "follow doctor's orders". The smartest thing to do would be to find friends who will adopt your cats and do a thorough cleaning of your homes. If he is allergic to cats -- why does he have one? Even if he carries his inhaler, which he should ALWAYS do, he could still end up having a reaction that could hospitalize or even kill him. Good Luck - guys don't like to confront illnesses - I think it makes them feel "weak".

carry one for him :-) You can not convince someone to do something they don't want to do - so carry an over the counter one. (primatine mist I think is the name of it).

Also - he may be taking allergy medication - so that may be the reason he is not that concerned. My fiance has the same allergy and has asthma, he does not need his inhaler all of the time - but he has to make sure he take an allery pill about 2 hours before he goes somewhere with cats. (I have 2 cats that have had to move outside btw)

Also - another thing you can do to help allay a reaction is to vacuum daily, where ever your boyfriend to be when he visits. (at your own home of course - lol)

Asthma, is a terrible illness. He must carry his inhaler with him at all times or he will be in the emergency room.He does not want everything to close up on him and have to depend on Dr's to make him breath again. I know I have been there. And it was very scary, I almost died.
