My uncle had to eat dogs when he fought in Vietnam. The soldiers used to feed the dog rice and then kill it so that they could eat everything at once. Sick, but it was survival of the fittest.

I did but I did not know it was dog meat when I ate it. I was told about it when the dinner was over. Cannot recall the difference between dog mean and pork...

Dogs and cats were not considered pets in China until 90's. In the old days, dogs were reared to guard the house. Cats to catch rats. So, eating these animal was not considered disgusting.

In China, there is a saying: Anything under the sun that has legs and its back faces the sun, can be eaten. Tables and chairs are excepted.

I agree.

Hardly anyone eats cats. Dog meat you can find around the place. I've tried it a few times and can eat at most only 2 mouthfuls because every bite has the taste that instantly reminds me of the smell of a live, cuddly pet dog.

But I suppose in India where there are a lot of Hindus that revere cows, and in Islamic countries where Muslims don't eat pigs, the very thought of eating them would make them feel sick. Heck, I hear that a lot of Americans can't even eat fish if it is served with its head on. That sounds totally absurd to me! :-)

When you're hungry, nothing too disgusting to eat.

Everybody in China, at some point in their live, including foreigners, has eaten dog or cat meat...albeit unknowingly. As omeone else said, meat is meat.

Now for truly disgusting, you should try the chilled pureed uncooked lobster...now that's disgusting...or how about turtle served on the shell..or better yet how about live shrimp squirming in a wine marinade.

Not in China, but I had dog in Vietnam. These are not family pets and are considered a delicacy and raised for this purpose. Nothing can go to waste there.

In most of the world the cultures are different from the Western model. You have to have an open mind and try different things when you travel. That is the joy of travel.

Such animals are served for dinner in more places than China- remember there has been much famine in China, and people will eat what ever can be found, including Rats.- It may sound disgusting now, but go without food for a week or so, see how you feel then.

I have to agree, it's all relative--the French eat snails--that's pretty disgusting--but some people like it. I think it's disgusting because of the cultural factor, the one where Americans or Westerners keep cats and dogs as pets. Also, I heard Chinese people eat dog meat but not cat meat. Maybe you should expand your horizons and give dog meat a try. You never know, but you might like it ;-)

I believe if you like some other people raising pigs as pets, eating pork would be disgusting? What about rabbits?
