Allergies are the result of your immune system becoming over active and can be inherited.

Allergies can be congenital (ie inherited ) or acquired.
Your immune system and its components react to certain substances in your environment in varying degrees.
When this reaction is excessive,it becomes an allergy.
There are also many degrees of allergic reaction --ranging from the life-threatening to the merely annoying.
lt is also possible to inherit allergies from your parents, even though they don't manifest the allergy themselves due to the gene being recessive in them .
To answer your question about nuts, they contain a substance known as Arachidonic acid -an essential element and precursor to many important chemicals in the body--in a form which stimulates a violent allergic reaction in some individuals.

Allergies are responses mounted by the immune system to a particular food, inhalant (airborne substance), or chemical. In popular terminology, the terms “allergies” and “sensitivities” are often used to mean the same thing, although many sensitivities are not true allergies. The term “sensitivity” is general and may include true allergies, reactions that do not affect the immune system (and therefore are not technically allergies), and reactions for which the cause has yet to be determined.

Some non-allergic types of sensitivity are called intolerances and may be caused by toxins, enzyme inadequacies, drug-like chemical reactions, psychological associations, and other mechanisms. Examples of well-understood intolerances are lactose intolerance and phenylketonuria. Environmental sensitivity or intolerance are terms sometimes used for reactions to chemicals found either indoors or outdoors in food, water, medications, cosmetics, perfumes, textiles, building materials, and plastics. Detecting allergies and other sensitivities and then eliminating or reducing exposure to the sources is often a time-consuming and challenging task that is difficult to undertake without the assistance of an expert.

Yes, allergies are inherited - I inherited a food allergy. What causes them is a mystery. Lots of different theories. Obviously, the immune system gets confused and attacks when it shouldn't. It not only attacks the allergen - it attacks cells that the allergen is in contact with and destroys them. Just as it does in a viral or bacterial infection. Maybe, the immune system thinks the protein in the nuts is a bacteria or virus. Maybe, the protein is very similar to a viral protein it has reacted to in the past. The immune system also reacts to what are generally refered to as parasites. For example, a bee sting isn't viral or bacterial but the immune system still reacts and in some cases - reacts so much it kills the person. The theory as to why the immune system kills cells that the allergen has come in contact with is because those cells may be damaged. The theory is the immune system kills off damaged cells all the time to stop them mutating into cancer cells. Or kills them because they have mutated. That, is the best I can do and as simply as I can explain it. But next time you get a cold and your throat really hurts. It's your immune system attacking - blasting not just the virus - but the cells in your throat and making it really sore. But if the immune system is attacking using T-cells, the big guns - you're about to get better; usually.
