Saint Thiruvalluvar was a famous Tamil poet, who lived 2000 years before. He has described the duties of a father and duties of a son. (in olden days it was male dominated society, so daughter's role was not depicted)
The gratitude a son can shower upon his father is making his father pride by hearing others say that what a great menace his(your) father has done to have him(you) as a son. Just live to the legend words. Say about Thiruvalluvar and his sayings to your father. This is very inexpensive; by the time more valuable.

The best gifts do not have to be expensive or cost anything at all. You can get a card and do something that your dad wants you to do. Say excel in your studies, or perform a task that he would like you to do, that you do not like to do.. for one month or a year, if you really want to give him a gift for the whole year.
It would not cost you any money, but that will be a great gift that he would truly appreciate.

Most dads would enjoy spending time with their family at home relaxing. Maybe playing some games. Another good idea is a good home cooked meal with out any family arguments. If you feel the need to buy him something, then try some tools or gagets, most dads like having gagets.

Invite one of his young age pal (whom he was very close with) for a dinner with him at your home. Let it be a surprise.
