There is no such town as 'Kowall' in NZ.
I'm pretty sure 'Kowall' has been mispronounced, and should be the Maori name 'Kawerau'. Which when said incorrectly, sounds very similar to 'Kowall'. It is a small town in the Bay of Plenty, which is in the Nth Island. The other option could be 'Kurow', which is in the Sth Island, in the Otago region. Perhaps even 'Cromwell'?
I guess this will just confuse you further...but ask any Kiwi to say Kawerau (except for Maori) and it will sound like 'Kowall'.
Best of luck with your search!

I have lived in NZ all of my life and I have never heard of such a place. Its not a very big country either.
If the Birth cert. was issued in NZ then it would have had to been done at a place big enough to have a courthouse. But if the person is just telling their birth place verbally later then they could use the name of any tiny village or hamlet. In New Zealand especially in the early 20th century than could be virtually anywhere, and it may no longer exist. I would guess that the Name "Kowall' could have been incorrectly transcribed from Maori or English
Maybe Kauwai or Kauwau

Maybe it has melted. Kowall is or was an iceberg located on the Ross Ice Shelf in New Zealand. Try contacting Thomas KOWALL of Edicom in New Zealand.

Not sure it exists in NZ. Could be a misspelling by the hospital on the birth certificate.

Do you think the town maybe 'Kowai'? It is a place name on te West Coast, it is not a large area at all. North of Westport.

Never heard of it. I live in NZ.

Give me more details and I will see if I can find something. Maybe it's a street name.
