Do not put something between the person's teeth as some donut suggested. What you need to do is make sure they are lying flat in the recovery position, protect and maintain their airway and if you have it available, give 5mg PR Diazepam. If the fit appears to be turning into a grand mal instead of a petit mal and is not abating after meds, call the ambulance and explain you have a person who appears to be having a seizure, and for how many minutes the fit has been lasting for.

I suppose there are various ideas depending on who trained you and where. here we first ensure safety, make a space around them so that during the seizure they can't injure themselves. If it is safe for you to do so, loosen tight clothing , do not force anything into the mouth. The worst that can happen is they bite their tongue, (not a life threatening injury and can be dealt with later) allow the person to rest once the casualty has finished the seizure. If when they feel like talking again they say it has never happened before, then they need to seek medical help. If one seizure leads to another then another, call for appropriate help. this is called status epilipticus and is very dangerous. Most people who have epilepsy by the way do not want fuss over it.
It is possible that they may make a mess of themselves so if in a public place try to find something to cover them with. If it is possible ask people to move well away to give the person some privacy. It must be embarrassing for them to wake up with a lot of eyes staring at them.
Hope that this helps.
(it is no longer good practice to force anything in their mouth, soft objects like fingers and pencils get bitten off and you have a foriegn object in there that you cannot get out, choking hazard. Anything hard other than a medical spatula with either break teeth or misalign the jaw.)

The last two pieces of advice are fairly good - think carefully about calling an ambulance - the fitter may not thank you for it. You only need one if:
This is the first fit (ever)
The seizure lasts longer than 5 mins
The person gets a head injury or similar whilst fitting

If you can get something between their teeth to keep them from biting their tongue then do so. Make sure they are in an area where they won't get hurt. Don't try to restrain them in any way. Don't put your fingers in their mouth trying to get something else in to keep them from biting. Reassure them when they begin to wake up. Stay with them until they are fully awake. Depending on how frequently a person has a seizure or if it's a new onset them they need to go to a health care facility to be seen.

Give the victim room. Don't hold him down. Keep him on his side if possible and put a pillow under the head or a piece of cloth or clothing or anything. Put a rag between the teeth IF POSSIBLE but DON'T force the mouth open.

Keep airway intact by introducing a metalic object like a spoon between tongue and palate, loosely tie the hands to either side, loosely tie the legs .Check the pockets/purse and dial friends/doctor for help.

move stuff around them and make sure they wont hurt themselves...

Pillow under the head if you can.. beware they can smack you hard but not intentionally..

When they are finished roll them onto thier side..

Do not try to put something in thier mouth .. thats crazy you wanna get your fingers bitten off!.... Noone swallows thier tounge although it may get bitten... Easier to fix a bitten tounge than bitten off fingers..
