Personally, I think it's because many people do not try to back up thier faith with any kind of study. They pick a religion from what thier parents told them to pick, or are just too lazy to learn anything other then the "basics". If you get into a debate and they get stuck for a point, then thier faith waivers, or they just sound ignorant, and so they don't want to debate.
This is not the case for all Christians, (although it tends to be the stereotype) but there are a good number of people out there that really have no idea what they're talking about, and just want everyone on thier "side".
As for being afraid of Islam, it probably has the same thing to do with not understanding. And if they can't debate thier own religion because they haven't looked into it enough, there's no chance that they're going to look at another.

not Christians. PEOPLE are afraid of debate. We're afraid of changing our mind. We like to think we know everything...and when we debate, we admit that we don't know everything.
I have found Christians to be just as good debaters as other faiths. Look up Josh McDowell or C.S. Lewis. It's just that some churches teach people to accept things blindly, without letting them understand enough to defend those beliefs.
Christians are afraid of Islam because the Quran says (although I've never read it), "He who kills an unbeliever does a good thing."

i do not trust you're an atheist yet nevertheless... William lane Craig has been very lively in portraying Dawkins as a 'coward' for no longer debating him and his followers are prepared to make this the commonly used public opinion. no one else buys it or perhaps with if it were real, no one has to apologise for it on his behalf. It really does no longer make atheism look susceptible. Craig is actual the only making people look undesirable the following - through resorting to defaming a would-be opponent who refused to have interaction him. the very similar habit is shown through his supporters, who likewise percentage an similar personality flaw. Ite quite pathetic and downright dishonourable. Its like one guy goading yet another right into a strive against, the different walking away and the goader then proclaiming 'ha, he replaced into too afraid to attempt'.

We walk by the guidelines that God gives us in the Bible. There are some people that God tells us not to debate with because they are committed to their own ways and no matter what you say to them they will not change. In my experience it is not just Christians that don't like to debate it is anyone who really doesn't understand their beliefs. Today, I am sorry to say, most Christians are very Bible illiterate because in the last 30 years Christianity has slipped away from Bible teaching to experiences and most Christians only care about their feelings and their experiences but have very little idea just what they really believe or what the Bible really teaches. Just look at the answers on Yahoo Answers.

NOT ALL CHRISTIANS ARE THE SAME. I'M A CHRISTIAN AND BELIEVE ME, I'M CERTAINLY NOT AFRAID OF DEBATE. AND I'M NOT AFRAID OF ISLAM.
I'M NOT AFRAID OF MUSLIMS, NOT AFRAID OF ATHEISTS, NOT AFRAID OF ANY OTHER RELIGION.
People are just afraid of what they don't understand. But it's a free country. Believe what you want to believe, and I'll believe what I want to believe. But please don't be so judgmental of others who don't believe the same as you. I don't! I happen to think that I'm a little more open minded than that.

what would you achieve with a debate? It is a waste of time, I mean think about it the best debater wins the argument and then what, they are no better of, then when they started! So what is the point! winning a debate proves nothing it does not prove that the winner has truth.

Good debate is based on the possibility of doubt. Religion, both Muslin and Christian is based on faith. Many people have a hard time hanging on to both faith and doubt.
It is a paradox to have both faith and doubt but I believe that that is indeed the human condition: a grand paradox.
If we can manage to hold on to both electrodes without getting too burnt, we can be more powerful than we think.

Because some seem to feel these days that any hint of anything against their way will make them loose all their faith and take it all away. Why else protest something that is just a movie as of recently...

Christians and Muslims have the same god. They both have to face this fact.
