I think I would admire a man who was self-employed for his bravery and tenacity. But a man who's an employee might have a steadier income and he might be more secure financially. Either way, I think there's more to liking a man than just what job he has because anything can happen at any time economically. A man who has strong moral and spiritual values is way more important cause he'll be the one who'll hold the family together through thick and thin.

I don't care much if he is independent or if he works for a company.... but I want him to be ambicious (not work-oholic) and sets goals... and to love me, of course ;)
He may be an independent man and establishing his own business (good) or just doing random jobs with no path (bad). Or working hard and climbing in a company (good), or just being there waiting for his paycheck or taking advantage of others (bad).... or both, working in a company but getting experience and contacts to establish his own in a future or already starting it.
