There are a number of things that trigger cold sores, but the biggest one is stress. I once had five (yes, 5!!) cold sores on my bottom lip at the same time, all because of a stressful event. Sun exposure (basically sunburned lips) can also cause them. Tomatoes and citrus fruits sometimes trigger cold sores because they are so acidic. For some people, certain foods like chocolate, wheat, and nuts can trigger a sore because they contain an amino acid called argine. Even coffee can bring on a sore.

Some studies suggest that B12 and folic acid supplements can help prevent cold sores. Also, the amino acid lysine can prevent sores - check the vitamin aisle for supplements. Finally, try eating yogurt with acidophilus (check the label) every day.

If your sores are frequent or especially intense, talk to your doctor. They can provide pills and ointments to relieve the symptoms and end the sore sooner. They may even give you some to have on hand, so you can treat at the first sign of a cold sore (the dreaded tingling). The sooner you begin treating it, the better chance you'll have of stopping it, so watch out for that tingling sensation. Put an ice cube on it, if nothing else is available. It may even prevent the sore from developing, if you're quick enough.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Cold sores are a form of Herpes virus and are nothing to fool around with. If you get the large painful cold sores get thee to a doctor and get a prescription for acyclovir. One pill a day as a preventive or up to five a day when you start to break out.

Or if you get muliple mild cases Blistex works wonders. Start using it as soon as you feel the tingle on the lip.

Don't kiss anyone when you have it.

The herpes virus that causes cold sores happens to love L-arginine, an amino acid found in high concentrations in things like chocolate. What confuses this virus is the similarity of L-Lysine in structure to L-arginine. Taking L-lysine on an empty stomach will help confuse the virus into taking in L-lysine, which effectively prevents its replication. Another good "cure" is licorice root extract. This stuff slaughters viruses of every kind, from Epstein-Barr, to Hepatitis, to SARS....don't believe it? Go to www.pubmed.com and search the 15 million biomedical citations for yourself....enter in the search engine "virus" and "licorice" and find out more. Good luck.

Oral sores can be a minifestation of deficiency in immunoglobulins. Eat healthy food and lots of fruits. Increase oral fluid intake and have a good oral hygiene. Inspite of these, you still have recurrent oral lesions, better have yourself checked by a doctor, preferrably an otolaryngologist or an internist.
