It could mean something about regret-- like, back in the day you wished were something other than what you were. But when you became that person, you realized how dope you were back in the day, and now you wished you were back like that, having never wished to be anything else.

it is a bit like if i knew then what i know now type of thing. you used to wish big things for yourself in your future,btu they never happened so now,you wished they had. that youd be somewhere or someone else.
20 years ago, if you'd wished you were a high flier, no kids or responsibilitys, and money for nothing but yourself. but things always happen, and somehow you went the other way. now you wish you wer what you was when you wished i were what i am, and mabe you you do it diffrently.....

Read it as 2 lines; it means nothing. Just a conundrum for kids.
If you were it, when you wished to be it, nothing could happen or change because it's already happened.

Meaning that - When you area nothing you wish you were a big shot(have everything) but once you have everything you realizew you were better off when you had nothing and still enjoyed life!
