Some people are allergic to milk, but most of the people that can't drink it are lactose intolerant, they aren't allergic. Lactose is a sugar found in milk that many people can't digest, so milk makes them ill.

Milk is meant for babies only. So as people grow up, they begin to develop intolerance to lactose, the sugar found in dairy products. Or some people are just naturally like that, just as some people are allergic to animals or grass or bee stings; everyone's body is unique.

Also, humans are the only species that drinks other species' milk. So this may have something to do with the allergies.

I wish I knew. My daughter was born with this allergy. And, NO, it is not the same as being lactose intolerant. I'm lactose intolerant and can drink lactose-free cow's milk, but my daughter must avoid every single dairy ingredient, down to the tiniest amount of whey or dairy solids or she'll break out in a rash and feel run down and sick. I nursed her for a year, so she didn't become allergic from early introduction to cow's milk. But when we served her birthday cake on her first birthday, she broke out in hives. Allergy testing revealed the milk allergy.

She's 19 now and is as allergic as ever, so she didn't grow out of it.

In this case, they lack the enzyme which enables their body to break down lactose (found in dairy).

It's actually very different from being allergic to say a "cat." Being allergic to a cat is a histamine response where your body produces histamines to attack the foreign body (sort of - very quickly).

It's the same reason that some people are allergic to pollen or penicillen... it just doesn't react well with their body.

It could be due to the fact their stomach can't handle dairy which why they get diarrohea or it may also be genetic.
