You have to understand that the existing photos on your computer would be in a standard JPEG format, which is already compressed.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that wrote the standard for image data compression. JPEG is now the most popular compression used.

Even if you winzip a JPEG file it is not going to get any more smaller in size! The only way to further reduce the size of a JPEG size is recompress back to a POORER quality. This means more data get dropped off as a trade-off for smaller file size. It means your photos will start to look grainy!

Heavy weight programs like Photoshop allows you to resave to a smaller JPEG file.

Another way to reduce file size is to scale down the pixel dimensions using an Image Resizer program.

Try following programs:
PhotoResizer
ImageResizer
PixResizer
AnyImage (recommended)

I would use the 'save as' feature and change it to a .jpg file..
you will lose a little of the color/texture/clarity qualities of the pictures.. but you will get a 1MB picture (typical size of any digital image) down to something like 50 or so Kb...
a 95% savings of hard drive storage usage..
a better example.. if you have 10 digital pictures, and you put them in the .jpg format ... you will create room for 200 using the new format
