I do, I try to share my smile with all that I meet, I even say hi. I can understand why your mom gets upset, when a girl smiles at a man it seems like an invitation to start a conversation. I won't say if smiling at someone is right or wrong. You can't go through life worrying if someone is going to try to talk to you. Smile a little and keep walking.

I am surprised why your Mom gets mad. On the contrary I really appreciate your gesture of smile pleasantly to the strangers. Otherwise now a days I have found young generation of your age very aloof and hardly mixes with people. On the contrary you are throwing positive vibrations to other which is very good sign. I congratulate for you act and please... please do not get bogged down by your Mom's behaviours. Continue what you have been doing as in return also you will get many positive vibrations when other person smiles back to you... It is the great feeling !

I smile a lot, but not at a lot of strangers. A few people from time to time if the mood's there. Then there are the others with whom I won't even make eye contact.

I do and it really upsets me when people don't reciprocate. A smile costs nothing and it's just part of civilized, polite society.

As for your mom...
Are you talking to strangers? I could understand THAT, but why not smile when you pass someone?

I don't see why, but it may be because your mom isn't comfortable with people she doesn't know. I don't see a problem with smiling at other people. Sometimes people I don't know smile at me and it really does make me feel better. It is just a nice thing people do.

I don't only smile at them! I Say HI! And then they start walking away from me faster.

Sometimes I wave and smile, depending on if I want to talk to them or not. I don't like to smile at really old single guys though (like in their fifties), cus then they'll want my phone number.
