I had the chimney repointed three years ago when it caused a damp patch on our bedroom wall and then repapered and emulsioned over it.The problem reoccurred but after having the brickwork spayed with a water repellent the damp patch has dried out leaving a water mark and a few black marks. Can I just paint over this or will their be mould growth.

If it has dried out completely then there should be no mould growth.
In the past where dried out damp spots occur - usually in artex - I've painted over the area with a matt gloss paint to seal the damp spot in and then a few coats of emulsion have done the trick.

Good luck

a oiled base paint like undercoat or gloss paint over affected area then when dry emulsion. But the problem lies in the plaster you might have to strip off the paper where the damp is and treat the area with a sealant.

You can, but put a layer of water damage paint over it first, it will stop the brown area coming through again. Ask at B&Q they'll know what you're after

Yes, but use Kilz sealer first. This will cover the dark spots and alleviate any further mould. I've used this method before and has worked very well for me. Good luck!
