I have been a step-parent and I know that the feeling is not the same. The way you love your own child, and the way you care for another person's child, are different.
Step-parents can and do love the children of their partners, they are important role models and in many cases they become a very important part of the child's life. But the feeling is different. It is a love no less valid and necessary, but it is not the same.

Remember also that in a lion pride, the first thing the new male leader does when he takes over the pack is to kill all the children of the previous male. Choosing the wrong stepfather can be a very bad move to make.

Speaking as a step father i can say yes. Even after our divorce i still conside my step daughter my daughter. A single parent that meets and falls in lone with someone take the parent and the child(ren) as a packaged set. Fall for the parent and love the kids as they are your own. I feel strongly about this. But i guess i am old school.

In some cases the can and long as he does not have ego problems which mean that they want to take it out on the child for not belonging to him. Just make sure that you keep an eye on him until you are sure. And one more thing listen to your child and try to believe him/her.

Yes they can. My dad's step-dad treated him and his brother like they were his own. He treated them better than their own father did.
