Typically the food you can buy in grocery stores has the first ingredients as corn. The crude protein percent comes mostly from non-meats. Dogs and cats nutritional requirements are quite different from ours. That crude protein is of a higher quality if the first two or three ingredients that the food is made from are meat products. It's complicated, they can still get the protein they need from grocery store food, but because the quality is lesser you usually end up feeding larger amounts to meet your pets requirements. With these foods you also get an increased output, poop. The higher quality foods cost more, but meet the requirements better and with less quantity being fed and less poo to pick up too. But, your point is well taken. Many people have fed grocery food in the past and today and have had pets live long healthy lives. Personally, though, I want the best quality for my Rottie, and the less poo I have to deal with the better. Good question. Hope my answer made sense.
