Okay... I took a few online IQ tests. On nearly all of them, I scored 130. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower but never below 126, and the highest was 135.

On one I qualified for a free personal intelligence profile. It said that I was an "insightful linguist". This means that I have a creative mind and am a good writer, which is good because that's what I plan on studying in college.

Here's the thing. I scored way higher than average in the linguistic and visual-spatial areas of the test. As a matter of fact, I was at 99.8% in linguistic and 99.5% in visual-spatial, which meant that I scored higher than 99.8% and 99.5% of the people who took the test.

In the math and logic sections, however, I scored very low. I was only in the 70th percentile in both. Are specific areas of skill like this common of a mental disability, like Autism, or a similar impairment? I'm really worried that I won't be able to make it through college, or in a serious career, with something like this on my mind

For anyone who doesn't know, 70th percentile means 60-70%, not 70-80 percent.

Yeah, but it's killing me. It makes me wonder what's so great about being able to talk and write?

I mean, most people have a steady layout of skills, maybe one is a little higher than the rest, but I scored a LOT lower in the Logic and Math tests.

Go see a Doctor, Therapist, Psychologist, etc, and he/she can help you with those questions, if it's that serious.

That's not indicative of a mental disability, it's just indicative of a natural (or studied) strength. Your scores in the logic section will not prevent you from making it through college, though there may be certain classes you'll have to put a little more time into. But with an I.Q. somewhere around 130, you'll have an I.Q. higher than most anyway, so you also have advantages others won't.

You can process information quickly, and all the more so in your chosen field, so don't worry about it. I was an English major and I really didn't have to take many classes where I had to focus on mathematics. I took one computer course and one statistics course (which was tougher than I expected it to be) and that was it for math. And in the sciences I took Oceanography and Biology and didn't have any troubles there either.

That's at least somewhat relevant, as I never scored particularly well in math either. Anyway. Don't worry about it. You have a distinct advantage over most people. Revel in that and don't worry so much. ;)

You are gifted in linguistics and creativity...these are your gifts. Don't worry about scoring low on logic/math. Who cares, unless you love math and can't imagine living without it. As you age you will probably become more logical. Some people are not wired to 'get' math and that's good! You are obviously very gifted and need to exploit your strengths. We all have weaknesses- get over it.
There are great artists that can't balance a checkbook, great politicians who are not logical (obviously), and physics teachers who can't understand a dirty joke.
Celebrate diversity and run with the gifts you have. Most are not so lucky! If it truly bothers you, take courses and get tutors, however; you will be taking time from further developing your true talents that come effortlessly.

This is not a sign of any mental disability, but perhaps dyslexia, which means you get #'s backward, see them diff. than most. You will do great in college, and if you have any trouble with math, start with a beginners class and work up. Also don't forget there are many cheap tutors out there to help with that. A lot of the math that you study will be word problems and your spatial abilitities will help greatly with these. Again, you can be tested at the school counseling dept. for dyslexia, if need be, but hun you've got it going on. don't give it any more thought. Good luck with your endeavors dear.

Math and linguistics are controlled by the opposite sides of the brain
I find with math, either you get it or you don't. There doens't seem to be much inbetween.
What you need is a really good math teacher. bc I had excellent marks one year, then we moved and the next year, my math was in the toilet. I had forgotten the basics over the summer (a two month period!) and the math teacher was a little too fast for me.

I believe that is something that warrants your concern...I mean this is your future you talking about. Would it be possible to a kind of pretest to see if you may need some extra working on this kind of mental disability? Any abnormality might be worth looking into, just to rule out any serious problems down the line.

Hey! Don't worry so much or you might really develop a mental disability. I think it just means you are better at some things than others. You'll do just fine in college. I know people who completed college w/o any problems and they are dumber than a bag of hammers! :-)

Take some time off to find yourself before you plunge into the "system". You will find the world a wonderful place and you will also be able to identify your gifts and capabilities far better than a questionnaire/test.
