There are sites like reunion.com and classmates.com that can help. If you know what school they went to, These sites also let you post missing persons requests. Other than that you can do member searches on yahoo, AOL, MSN for the name. Most sites let you access the personal profiles which may have pics.
Short of paying one of those people search companies that is the easiest I have found. Problem with people search companies is that they don't always come up with the right person.

Do you know his/her last postal address? you can probably trace addresses and change in address, its usually listed. Or last place of work or college attended. If you are in US dont you have social security numbers, that usually help u guys there isn't it?
