When search stops, I perform a CTL.-ALT-DEL, get a notation in Windows Task Manager that program is not responding and I have to end the task. This happens 100% of the time. What can I do short of reformatting & reinstalling XP program?

u've gotta be very patient with windows coz it sucks most of the time...
When its searching, dont hit the X (Close button) let it take its time...
One reason why this could happen is the folder in which you are searching might have a huge compressed file (any file more than 10 mb is huge for windows). Check if your folder has huge .zip or .rar files... If yes, then therez no other option.. you've gotta wait till it completes...

If you are planning to install windows again, go for Windows 98. Its got better search algorithm than XP..

The best option: Switch to linux :)

Try visiting http://updates.microsoft.com/ and updating first to SP2 if you haven't already.

Then download crap cleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/ .. it fixes a lot of issues that can be found on your PC. do not be afraid to delete everything it detects as "junk". (It actually resolved a winamp problem i had)

Hopefully these will fix the problem for you. Otherwise you are looking at a windows repair installation, which we can come to later if it gets to that stage.
