France's upper parlaiment just passed a law to make it harder for unskilled migrants to settle in France. Other provisions include: Only the qualified get "skills and talents" residency permit
Foreigners only allowed in to work, not live off benefits
Foreign spouses to wait longer for residence cards
Migrants must agree to learn French
Migrants must sign 'contract' respecting French way of life
Scraps law on workers getting citizenship after 10 years

Of course opponents say the French are being racist.

What do you think?

And if the French Parlaiment 'gets it' why doesn't our own government?

Ferret - I'll go with arrogant, but that isn't the same as 'racist'.

I don't see anything racist there. Immigrants must agree to abide by requirements set by the host nation, or stay home. Migrants are not citizens and should not be entitled to many of the things citizens are. It only makes sense that migrants strive for citizenship, and learning the language and respecting the laws of the host country is a must.

Not, its not being racist. It's setting clear rules. America should do the samething.

France has been "nice" for a long time. They now have a large number of immigrants, their government had to address the resulting issues.
French is the official language of France, but the number of other languages being spoken in France, is on the rise.
They have every right, as a soverign nation, to create & enforce laws. If you don't want to follow the laws of a nation, don't move there.
France, like the US, have citizens of all races, classes, skill level, etc. Again France, like the US, have a number of unskilled workers, if there is difficulty providing jobs for the unskilled already there, allowing more only makes the unemployment problem worse. The drain on the economy increases, crime increases, poverty... etc.
These are laws that will help immigrants succeed in France.
These laws might be anti-lazy/disrespectful-immigrant, but they are NOT Racist.

Not so much racist as they have a superiority complex. The English are somewhat the same way (I'm from a 100% English family). They see other cultures as inferior rather than the people directly. But what can you say, they are both some of the oldest cultures in the known world.

I think france has even worse immigration problems than we do in america, their problem group is africans with no money, our problem is mexicans with no money. The african continent has been a bottomless pit for foreign aid money, as mexico has, and the short answer is that the western countries are being PLAYED. For 'stupid'. France is finally buying a clue on the issue, as are many americans, although Bush and company want to leave the back door open for mexico to come on through anyway...they like the idea of fiercely loyal potential voters that are easy to recruit by giving out handouts, and that's exactly what they're doing. The OTHER 280 million people in america, though, are strongly against the 'ghettoization' of america, we've got enough poor people already, adding more to the mix is not going to improve the economy, nor public safety, nor 'diversity', that last one especially because now you see this new balkanization where you have 'mexican' neighborhoods, 'muslim' neighborhoods, 'russian' neighborhoods, etc etc etc. If you're going to emigrate, it means that you thought your last country was crappy, and you want a new shot at life somewhere else, and you want to leave all those problems behind etc. That hasn't been what's happened in either france OR america, and tolerating the current outcome isn't wholesome for either country.
Mexico's a different situation from Africa in that they DO have an economy of some measurable value, a GDP of some 1 trillion dollars, and they've gotten SO expert at manipulating the american legal system that they're now campaigning basically for voting rights for mexican citizens in american elections, kind of trying to just 'weld' mexico onto america. Well, if I'm reading the tea leaves right, that weld isn't going to hold, and the outcome more and more americans want to see with each passing day is a general, peaceful exodus back to Mexico, self-righteous indignation included.

Mexico could be flourishing. Mexico could be rolling in money. Mexico could be a much better country than it is today. BUT, the government and the people that run the place don't appear to generally hold the view or the inclination to even try to improve it, hence the trap their people are in. I think in this instance the concept of 'compassionate conservatism', meaning you don't let people rob you blind but you do make sure there's some kind of means for them to keep trying to go forward in life(no, NOT amnesty, I'm talking about a 'tough love' foreign aid program to kindly but firmly drag Mexico along the path to progress, that they WILL reimburse us for, down the road), is the wisest choice.
People that commit criminal acts usually do so out of desperation. If Mexico can finally come to its' senses, manage its' population growth, and at least TRIES to make some token steps toward reform, they'll be rewarded with a stronger economy, a happier population, and represent LESS of a problem to the United States and less of a threat to OUR economy and general well-being across the country. The 'drug war' needs to be stopped, and for the now, part of that is controlling who is getting into our country through/from Mexico AND Canada, as they're turning a blind eye to their own pot mega-farms etc., and allowing all this to go on, knowingly or otherwise. The writing is on the wall, 'america needs to be sheltered from hostile foreign influences', be they cut-throat businessmen, drug dealers ,foreign despots, whatever, guarding that which we have and respecting it and holding it dear to our hearts is the wisest choice on this, also in terms of the affect that our policies have on Mexico. IF america were to fall apart, who would Mexico leech off of then? LOLOL

It's not racist, if they don't have the required skills to get a job in French, then they dont need to go there at all

The French welcome races for years. And many black settled there and were accepted well.
It isn't about race--its about the results of too many in and no planning on the government.
Now they have to be tough-their in economical trouble. And they can't bury their heads.
Our government are spoiled pampered chickens afraid to face the issues. Its a popularity contest now for them-not leadership.
