First off- take the cat to the Vet ASAP. That way you can get him checked out, and make sure he's okay. If he has diarrhea, and not gaining any weight, its probably parasites. Don't try any of the over the counter remedies, these can potentially be bad for a cat, also, some of the parasites are transferable to Humans.
Also, I would feed him a high quality cat food. Royal Canin, Solid Gold, Nutrena. Science Diet and Iams are okay, but not that great. The food will be expensive, but you will feed him less, and the cat will use the litterbox less. It costs something like a few cents more per day to feed him high quality cat food vs low quality.

I have a 1year old male cat and I have worked at animal hospitals in the past. First of all, I would like to point out that if you plan to own a cat, you will need to clean the litter box every day. Most kitties are picky about how clean the box is.
The fact that your kitty was a stray and has diarrhea suggests that he has parasites. You definitely need to bring the cat to a vet's office for a checkup, vaccines and to diagnose the diarrhea.
In the meantime, keep him on a diet of cat kibble only. No human foods, no wet cat food. If you think he is less than 1 year, try Kitten Chow.

Your cat has worms. These could be hook worms, roundworms or even tapeworms. He will need to see a vet as over the counter treatments only treat one of the possible worms. If you are not seeing worms in his feces then he needs a vet as the over the counter is not made for the parasites he has.
Also, as a stray, he may be eating more than is safe for him. Don't leave food down all day. Give him food at a certain time of day. The bag of food will have it's serving size on it. Also, look at the food your using. If it's a generic, it may have too much filler and not enough nutrients.

Take him to the vet first...he could have parasites that are causing the diarrhea. Secondly, rather than feeding him grocery store food feed him premium food. Grocery store food is full of fillers and junk they sweep up off the floor...with premium food it is much easier to zero in on whatever could be causeing his stomach irritation and cut it out of his diet altogether. Premium food such as Nutro, Iams, or Science Diet seem more expensive but you actually have to feed the cat much less of it for the cat to get the right amount of nutrition...and that equals less poop. Once you find a food that is really good for him stick to it and don't switch it for anything...chicken and oatmeal is a usually a sure thing...lots of animals have beef and rice allergies.

Try changing the food you are giving him. Go to naturapetproducts.com and read all you need to know about cat nutrition.
I don't think the cat is sick at all. Read the ingredients of the food, corn and wheat products are not good for cats neither is any plant material. By products of any kind are bad so is "animal digest" Good luck

whiskas cat food should be the best idea! stick to chicken flavor all cats seem to love that. a home alternative could be overcooked rice mixed with a boiled egg's white only! by the way i dont think hes much of a kitten if hes eight months! having to clean the litter box everyday is normal! even mine craps alot! make sure you provide plenty of water! they cant digest without it!

You might want to get the cat checked out by a vet...since there aren't any diet changes, you never know, he might have a parasite or something..

Take him to a vet could be numbers of things wrong with him. Your best bet is to take him to the vet asap. No one can really diagnose the problem over the Internet. I am sure if you take him he will be okay though!
