That's right. In WWI the pit bull was a hero. I'm not writing this to preach that everyone should love pit bulls. A person's opinion is just that...an opinion, and they're entitled to theirs. But whether you like them or whether you don't, your forced to faced with all of the "pit bull attention" going on today. It is most interesting to read up on history of the breed and compare it to all that we hear today. Pit bull bite statistics are comparable to car accident statistics. In the 1920's there were far fewer car accidents than there are today, reason being because there were far fewer cars. The same applies to pit bulls. Years ago there were far fewer pit bulls than there are today. Today there are more pit bulls than any other breed, so it only makes sense to understand that there will be more problems from the pit bull. Simply put, dog bites/attacks are more prevelant today because the dog population is huge and continues to grow - MANDATORY SPAY/NEUTER of ALL pets is the remedy.

This is for those that think pit bulls are aggressive by nature
Any breed of dog can become aggressive and dangerous, not just the pit bull! It is usually their owners that turn them into aggressive dogs! Therefore if a dog has to be put down and it can be proved the owner was the reason it was aggressive, put the owner down too!

To the answerer who said something about pits and little kids...at the same time they are being promoted as a symbol of tenacity and strength, they're also keeping kids company.

Have you heard of the Little Rascals? How about their dog with one black eye, Petey? Guess what he was?

Also, mandatory spay/neuter of all pets is not the answer, but that's a different thread.

Pit bulls are friendly to humans they just don't always like other dogs. They were known as nanny dogs in England because they were so good with children. They are born nice it's the people who ruin them!

Whoo-hoo! I knew it. Stubby was an all-American hero. Here's some more info on him: http://www.browardhumane.com/documents/APopularHistoryofthePitBullinAmerica.pdf#search='stubby%20the%20pit%20bull'. He saved lives, carried messages, watched over the soldiers, and assisted in finding wounded men. Exactly the sort of dog I wouldn't hesitate to raise my children around. The pit bull was known as the "Nanny Dog" because of how wonderful they are with kids. I pity the people who blindly believe every bit of information they are fed from the media, slaves to fear mongering reporters.

Yep, contrary to what the media has programmed us to believe, pit bulls were actually bred to be good with children. They have a high tolerance for pain which enables them to tolerate the aggravating things that children do to animals (pull tails, yank ears, pinch toes, etc).
Petey from the famous show "The Little Rascals" was a pit bull. And Helen Keller's service dog was a pit bull, so no, the dog wasn't bred to conquer, maim and kill people, IT WAS BRED FOR LOYALTY AND COURAGE FOR ITS PEOPLE FOR THOSE WHO MISSED THAT PART!!!!!
And for the record, no dog should be allowed to injure anyone, that has nothing to do with breed, that goes for all dogs.

If it is true and pit bulls were the slogan dog in WWI, it is because that is exactly where they belong; in a war and not at home around children or where they can get out and hurt other unsuspecting people. In a war, your job is to conquer, maim or kill and that is exactly what they do.

Not sure this really qualifies as a question; it's more like a monologue, lol. I agree with you regarding the breed, though. A very good friend of mine owns a few, and one knocked a shotgun off of her chest when her psycho ex-bf tried to kill her. The dog didn't harm anyone, but her son had no choice but to shoot the b*stard or get killed himself.
