It is fairly easy to silence a firearm but understand you can truly only silence a bullet that is traveling less than the speed of sound. Any bullet traveling faster than that has it's own sonic boom which sounds like a crack down range. That you cannot silence. Sub-sonic cartridges are designed for slower velocities which will allow for true silencing. At sea level, I believe the speed of sound to be around 750 miles per hour which translates to ~1100 feet per second. The rest of the answers are true enough... just like adding a muffler.

A silencer works much the same way as a muffler on a car. It allows for the expansion of the gas created by the gun powder exploding to expand at a slower rate in the chambers of the silencer. The result is that energy that would be used to make noise is used to create heat. This heats the silencer considerably.
If you ever use a silenced weapon you have to be cautious not to touch the silencer after use because it is likely to be hotter than the barrel of the gun.

I think the chamber suppresses the amount of air movement caused by the mini-explosion that occurs when a bullet is propelled. The chamber extends the amount of space the sound has to dissipate, creating a less noisy explosion. I could be wrong on some details, but I saw an awesome TV show that explained the whole thing so simply. It even had diagrams. If you can find that you'll find a comprehensive answer to this.

Same way a muffler on a car does. There are baffles that muffle the sound in the interior of the sound suppressor arranged in a certain way to difuse the report of the bullet.
