I go to a local store to buy stuff, and I pay the cashier & get the change. Then I put the coins & notes into my purse & put it into my pocket and leave; this process takes just about five seconds. But this is where I felt kinda bad - usually the cashier, after handing over the receipt with change, waits for me to put everything in place and set myself before leaving. But today, this cashier gave me the change and said "can you move?" almost immediately (when I had just about opened my purse).

I felt bad because almost all cashiers I've met have been very patient and courteous with me, i.e. they wait for me till I get set - except this guy.

What is your opinion on this? Was the cashier being rude to me, or was it entirely my mistake?

He said the exact words "can you move?", but he was not an American or a native English speaker.

Yes, of course, there were one or two people behind me.

Purse = Wallet (in British English)

THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR SUPPORT, ALL

I knew he was wrong, as soon as I left the store - but since I haven't lived in America for long, I wanted to know what is right or wrong over here.

Sounds rude. Had the cashier "asked" you instead of directed you... "I beg your pardon, may I ask you to move over so I can serve the next customer?" that would have met his needs and been respectful to you.

Yes it was rude. Maybe the cashier was having a bad day or wasn't feeling well. Whenever I find a cashier to be a bit rude I try to give him/her the benefit of the doubt but still try not to get in that line again. Most of the time cashiers are friendly but I suppose there can be circumstances where they just can't be. It reminds me of the time I got a phone call at work that was VERY VERY distressing but I had to remain pleasant and finish my 2 hour shift with my client anyway...I look after elderly people in their homes. It was a very long shift and she kept talking about the same old stuff as if I cared but I managed to hold it together until I could get out of there and she never knew I was stressed.

there could be many sides to this incident. No doubt that he was rude for using the wrong words. Also his job is to be patient with the customer and he should have waited a little long . But then there could be other sides as well -

1. Rush hour and people might be waiting behind you
2. May be he was in a bad mood - some personal problem
3. May be he was new to the job and will learn with time.

You have the option to report it back to the manager of the store or just forget it.

The cashier was rude - no doubt about it! Even if he wanted you to get out of the way, he defintiely should NOT have verbalized it like that! I've taken a long time getting my change in my wallet, etc. and I've never had a cashier say anything like that to me. If for some reason he really did need you to move aside, he should have asked much more politely. He could've said something simple and considerate like, "Excuse me, would you mind moving over just a little please?"

You need to accept your change, get your bags and go. You can 'get set' when you get in the car and do what you need to do. I don't think the others in line should have to wait while you try to keep your stuff neat. Time is important to people, some days every second counts. I think it was rude of you to hold people up. Do you not think of the others behind you or only of yourself? I'm not saying he went about it the right way, but maybe you weren't thinking of the others.

I am a cashier myself. What he did was rude. He could just say I know you want to put your money away but can you please step out of line so I can attend the other customers. thank you for shopping here. When I am ringing in people. I let the person put his/her money away but I attend to the next customer right away. If that first person isn't finished putting the money away then they are taking too long. So when the next order is finished that first person should have been all settled cause I gave them time to put their money away and extra time with the second customer.

I was a cashier a few years ago before I started college. If someone would take a littles extra time to put their things in their purse I'd usually wait and not say anything. If it took longer than it should I would say something like "excuse me ma'm but could you please step over....thank you." But I would definitely say that woman was rude. Did you get her name? Call the manager of the store and say something. I would've said something rude back but that's just the witch in me.

Yes, very rude. The customer is always right anyway! He/she could have asked you more nicely if it really was necessary for you to move. I always feel awkward when I'm trying to put money away and someone is behind me though. I usually move over a little bit so they can get started. I'm wondering if someone was behind you, but even then, the way the cashier spoke to you was rude. One thing that I know bugs cashiers is when customers are on cell phones and slowing down the transactions. We need to have more cell phone etiquette these days.

I think the guy could have been more courtious when he asked you to step aside, especially if he had a long line behind you, but thats where we fail as a people, we are all just so damn rude to one another it aint even funny. If you felt he was being rude then the next time your in his line if he acts like that then just tell him to think about being more courtious to his customers. I dont trhink that we realize how rude we can be at times, so call him on it maybe it'll change, maybe it wont, butr you'll feel secure in your own mind

It was rude. I was a cashier and would never tell someone to move. It doesn't usually take that long for people to put change in their purse or wallet.

say this and that how long the cashier had to stare at you and the customer behind you had to wait it is kind of annoying. Why do you have to do that at the register, will it kill you to move. Maybe he was waiting to use the bathroom, lunch, make an improtant phone call, or go home.
