Sounds gross, but you could do it. First, you need to clean the container as well as you can (preferably glass), and it wouldn't be a bad idea to boil the water and sugar to kill any bacteria. Let the water cool to room temperature before adding the yeast, then put everything in your container. Your container needs to be airtight but must have a release for the carbon dioxide created by the alcohol. If you don't have the proper cap, you could use a plastic tube that you attach into the lid of your container. Put the other end of the tube in a bowl of water. This will prevent air from going backwards into the container and contaminating it. After a few days, the tube in the bowl should begin to bubble. About 2 weeks later, when it stops bubbling, the yeast will be out of sugar or will have produced enough alcohol to kill itself. Wait about a week after the bubbling stops to make sure the yeast is done.

While this would probably work, I don't recommend it. If you do it right, it will be about the strength of beer and won't taste very good (like soggy bread water). You could then distill it into hard alcohol through a boiling and condensation process (it would make a rum-like alcohol), but it would be a tedious process and not be worth the trouble. I recommend going to a brewing store and asking for a good recipe with some hops and malts and make yourself some delicious beer. It's not too difficult and can be very rewarding.

T r gets it right; for the person mentioning mead, they shold learn that meade is made from honey.... potatoes, malt, juice and everything else people mention are really only sources of sugar and flavor... the yeast eats the sugar, and turns it to alcohol. When you hea the solution, the alcohol evaporates out and you collet it as described.

Scotch is mostly grain, sugarand yeast. Yeast, when fermented and sweetened, turns into alcoholic beverage. It is very easy to ferment and distill yeast into alcohol---the trick is in ageing it so it drips smooth on your tongue
