STOP.
Unless you have had personal experience with pit bulls, you have NO RIGHT to judge them.
I don't care what you say or who you are, if all you go by is what you hear on the media then you need to get off your lazy *** and do some research before you start bashing on them.
They aren't as cute or frilly as your little yorkie but they are NOT ALL DANGEROUS.
If you would've researched the story that you heard on the news last night about a pit mauling some child, you would have found out that the pit originally was bred/raised to fight, chained up in a backyard 24/7, and taught that it was RIGHT to maul things smaller than itself. The media doesn't say that, does it?
Just because they *look* dangerous doesn't mean that they are- and just because one pit bull has bitten doesn't mean they all will. I don't see you all saying labradors are dangerous, yet they've mauled/bitten before..
You people need to STOP judging. If you don't have sources for your answers then DONT ANSWER.

WHAT I AM GETTING AT is that people are constantly "afraid" of these dogs and telling others that they are dangerous only because of what they have seen on televison. however i've dealt with many many pit bulls due to working at a shelter and yes I do know a lot of them are unpredictable and aggressive but there ARE some that aren't. ALL DOGS CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE. It's not just the breed.

A pit bull is no more dangerous than any other dog. First of all, do any of you know how many dog breeds are misidentified as a pit bull? Too many. What it comes down to is people need to train and socialize their dogs from the beginning. All dogs need love. They give us unconditional love, we need to return it. It takes hard work to have a dog.

The day I met my husbands dog, he bit my shoe. The dog nipped at me every time I went near him. After we got married, we had a trainer come to our house and work with us. I fed the dog by hand and gave out all rewards. We now have a dog who gives me kisses every day and is no longer aggressive. I understand that It wouldn't take much for him to revert back to his former self, but as long as he is in a loving home, there is no problem. (The vet didn't even need to muzzle him to take blood last week! She said he was the sweetest little dog. He even gave her kisses when she finished)

If you are looking to get a dog, don't go to a pet store, they are full of puppy mill dogs. Find a reputable breeder. Interview as many as it takes to find the right one. There are too many dogs in shelters. A bad choice in picking out a dog will just add one more to the shelters. (and you don't have as muchcontrol over bad habits from a shelter dog since you don't know what it's home life was like)

What Pit Bulls Need
If you have, or are thinking of adopting, a pit bull, please ensure that you can provide the following:
- Plenty of early socialization with dogs and with people, beginning as young as seven weeks of age and continuing into adulthood.
- Training, starting with Puppy Kindergarten and progressing through Basic and Advanced Obedience. We highly recommend continued guidance throughout the dog’s life.
- Neutering or spaying--there are already too many pit bulls and not enough homes for them.
- Lots of daily exercise! Pit bulls are high-energy athletes!
- Honest and constant attention to the behavior of the dog. Questionable behavior can never be excused, and must be addressed immediately through training/retraining, and/or management

You are 60 times more likely to be killed by a coconut than a pit bull. There are many breeds that you may THINK are pits, but aren't. They are very sweet and loyal dogs. Do not judge a whole breed based on the acts of some ignorant people. Some dogs snap--so what?? So do other dogs. Every other breed of dog can be bred and trained to be aggressive. Don't blame attacks on the dog, focus on the person and people who made it happen.

I agree, it is not in their blood to be viscious, it is how they are raised. The same goes for any breed. You can have any breed of dog and if you starve that dog, it WILL fight another dog, no matter what the breed. IT IS NOT IN THEIR BLOOD TO ATTACK. I own three pitbulls, I used to own poodles, and everyone of my poodles were more viscious than my pitbulls have ever been. My kids grew up with pitbulls, pulling on their ears, tails and pulling up on the dogs when they were first learning to walk. My pits are very protective over my kids, they will sniff people and stand by my kids to make sure they are alright, if my kids are squealing, my pits will run and check on them to make sure they are ok. Anyone can come in my house, and sit down and play with my dogs and pet my pits, I have never had a problem with them, and that is because of they way they were raised. You raise them right they will be fine, if you abuse and neglect them, they might turn. It's just like humans, people that are abused as kids can turn out to be killers can't they??? Think about it before you go bashing the breed, maybe the people bashing the breed should do some research on the breed, or get to know a pitbull to fully understand they are a determined breed, determined to make their owners happy that is!! Also, 'their jaw does not actually lock, it is determination that keeps their jaw shut, it is no different than any other dogs jaw" Courtesy of my vet Dr Thomas!

Pit bulls are VERY dangerous. My little 3 year 2nd old cousin was attacked by one last year, and it nearly killed her. It belonged to the neighbor 5 doors down the road. It was NOT chained, it was in a fence, it was NOT raised to fight. It was a pet. It got out of it's fence one day and came into their yard. My cousin called it over and was petting it while his wife went to get the owner. The dog seemed friendly and his daughter (who is 3 and LOVES animals) went to pet it and it attacked her. It torn a place in her arm that she will have to live with the rest of her life, and she now has scars on her neck and face from it. My cousin got the dog off of her and put her in the house, and called 911. When the owner got there he took the dog home and killed it with a shotgun. I had seen the dog before, I knew the man who owned it, and I know that it seemed harmless. But how many stories do you hear about a lab hurting someone . . . maybe 1 every 5 years? Pit bulls do it daily. . . . So don't try to tell me they aren't dangerous, I can show you pictures of how dangerous they are.

People are ignorant about pits because they don't care enough to seek answers to their questions. In fact they don't question at all until they hear or read about an attack.
The pitbulls aggression has taken the focus off the german shepherd, doberman st.bernarnard, rottweiler and chow and will continue to do so until another breed comes along causing problems.Unfortuneate but true.
ANY dog should be considered dangerous by the public not just pits.None can be trusted not to bite.I cannot count the times I've watched someone jerk their arm out of my car window after reaching thru a 4inch crack to pet my shepherds who are always in my car.People are just stupid and in my case have NO RIGHT to try to molest my dogs while they're left unattended for a couple of minutes.

bad owners make bad dogs, raise them right and you wont have the problem sometimes dogs are the most gentle of breed , lets say they growl at a male that's unaltered and it is altered that's why people don't take little things like this into thought . all dogs can be aggressive . all dogs can bite , not just this breed and they shouldn't be put in a category as an unsafe dog . If they are trained properly they wont have the problems they do . I think its sad they get abused and taught poorly how to act and then abandoned and put down and even worse are the ones that were taught right and lost and were ut down because everyone thought pitbulls were so dangerous

I agree with you that any dog can be dangerous, but I do not think you have a firm grasp on the reality of what kind of damage a pit bull can do. these dogs were bred for fighting and viciousness. I agree that the news may not say how the dog was raised by the owner showing that it was intentionally mean, but i also dont believe that EVERY pit bull attack is by one of these dogs. alot of breeds are around for specific reasons, that is what is passed down by genetics alone. Have you ever heard how you shouldnt take a wolf from the wild? they will always be wild, even thought they may seem tame for awhile it only takes one small slip and it is attacking someone and is wild again. the same goes for pits, rotts, and a number of these kinds of dogs, they are always going to have a mean streak, wether on the surface or buried just beneath, and when it shows someone could be hurt or killed.

pardon me for interupting.. not everyone is ignorant and one of your statments is infact incorrect - I quote you "They aren't as cute or frilly as your little yorkie but they are NOT ALL DANGEROUS"

they are Dangerous - they were bred to FIGHT BULLS in the rings or "pits" they were bred to be fearless and tough in the face of an agressive BULL.. they were selected based on strength and tenacity.. They were bred to have a DEATH grip bite.. a jaw that locks and doesnt let go. This is FACT and cannot be disputed..
Yorkshire Terriers (like all terriers) were also bred to HUNT, however their prey was smaller, now I am not saying Yorkies are not dangerous too.. they are - but their bite is not going to be as serious as a much larger, much stronger dog like the Staffordshire Terrier for example....

True bad owners make bad dogs, but some dogs who are made bad are more of a threat then others, and often the personality type of the person attracted to a certain breed is one who is likely to want a potentially dangerous "theatening type" of dog...

Labradors are "soft-mouth" breeds, they were bred for retreiving ducks so were selected for being really really gentle with carrying things in their teeth, Yorkies are even more dangerous than Labs....

Wow! A bit hostile aren't we??? My sister happens to be a pit breeder. 1 of her dogs is the grandson of a dog featured on a rap CD, so we know the bloodline and that dog has no fighters in the pedigree. My sister also has a 7 year old son. If you walk by they attack their fence. Anyone who goes to visit has to call from the driveway so they can put the dogs up before you can get out of your car. As I was leaving from a visit, the dogs were outside, 1 climbed the fence & came after me. I got in the car safely but he stopped trying to attack my car long enough to run towards the house when my nephew opened the door. I am happy to say that my nephew is fine and they now have a taller fence. BUT NO ONE in my family will EVER visit my sister's home again.

You are definitely right! It's not the dogs themselves it's the owners who make them mean! When any dog is being raised you have to teach them what's right and wrong just like a child! If you treat them badly or abuse them then of course they will be mean (any animal or even person would be)! If an animal is treated right (even a pit bull or a doberman) then they will be good family pets!
