there is no formula or recipe. Being a witch is not nec. the same thing as "wiccan" - but basically a witch is someone who channels the naturally occuring energy of the universe to produce a result.

some people can channel this energy easily, others can't do it at all or have to practice to the point they stop believing in it. in my opinion though - a real "witch" doesn't need spells or magic - but can do everything within his/her own mind. doing spells or using items basically aids in the visual/mental process - if you're good at channeling the energy, you don't need it.

personally, i don't like the word witch, and i don't like the stereotypes that go with it. And i'm sure you're going to get some interesting responses to your question.

It all depends on how you define "Witch"

If you ask, they may not tell you. There are a lot of closed-minded people out there that woud seek to cause problems for a Witch, simply out of their lack of understanding of what Witches really do. They are just like anyone else.

So.. in general.. ther really is no way to "tell". If you were of like mind... perhaps you can feel it... otherwise... no. the taurus sculcus that the folks in the burning times believed is not true...

There are ways of telling whether she is a witch.
Tell me. What do you do with witches?
Burn them.
And what do you burn, apart from witches?
Wood.
Good. Now, why do witches burn?
because they're made of... wood?
Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood?
Build a bridge out of her.
But can you not also build bridges out of stone?
Oh yeah.
Does wood sink in water?
No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond!
No, no. What else floats in water?
A Duck.
Exactly. So, logically...
If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood.
And therefore...
A witch!

Wrathpuppet, you crack me up!
Ya, and Witches are made of wood.
For all those who don't get that, please just disregard that comment.

The best way to tell if someone is a Witch is to ask them.
Also, you might want to let them know what YOUR definition of a Witch is. Just so they know whether they fall into your idea or not.

If they way the same as a duck, then they're probably a witch. Be careful, she may turn you in to a newt.

Tell them something very, very, insulting, like a slur on their heritage. If you're still living, they are not a witch. If they are...well nice knowing ya.

Oh, oh, I know this one. You throw them in the water and if they drown they were not a witch.

People actually believed this nonsense.
