I find that just as I am drifting to sleep, I am still conscious, and I recall that what I am thinking about is total nonsense. So maybe it would help to think about really abstract, nonsensical things that are "gentle" at the same time, like a yodeling cactus or something. Can't you just hear a lonely saguaro cactus drifting into a perfectly even tone that resonates through the canyon just as the moon is beginning to rise. . .and how beautiful a tone. . .zzz. . .zzz. . .

Repetition is the key to falling asleep quicker. Find a system that works for you then do it each and every night. This helps to clear your mind, which is often the cause for a restless sleep, because you are expecting the result to occur regardless of anything else. Try lying on your right side, then after about 30-40 seconds roll over to your left and then back to your right. Keep repeating until you find out which side works. Then, lower the number of times you roll over each night. You might find that once you are on your right, then your left and then back to your right, you will be able to fall asleep quicker. But most importantly, do the exact same thing each and every night. Do not change.

There's a sleep program called HemiSynch that you can listen to thru headphones before you go to sleep. It gives off light soundwaves that go into your ears at different times & calm the brain to get a better night's sleep. You can listen to it while you fall asleep. It's been proven to be effective. I have listened to them & they do work on the brain's chemistry to help you sleep better (I have wicked sleep problems as well). Of course, put on that classical relaxing music beforehand, have some nice aromatherapy candles going with the classical music, or incense is great also. Once you feel somewhat tired, blow out the candles, turn off the classical & listen to your hemisynch tapes.

It's so hard to go to sleep if you'r being fun and creative..you need to wind down and relax!
Take a nice relaing warm bath or shower, drink some milk, go to bed, close your eyes and relax very muscle in your body head to toe..and sleep.

I turn on my TV to Boomerang (channel 297 on DirecTV) with the sound down very low. Oh, and I turn the sleep timer on so that my TV turns off in 2 hours.
I can hear the sound, but it is a steady, even noise with NO COMMERCIALS to alter the volume. I close me eyes and listen to the Flintstones or Jetsons or whatever is on. Just listening to these old cartoons puts me right to sleep.

Turn on a clock radio -- low volume. Set it to shut off after so many minutes -- maybe 30. Listen to something calming.

smoke a joint.
and if you're not into that just quiet your mind and breath slowly - in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Or masterbation - that sometimes works too. lol

Whatever you do, DON'T look for FUN or CREATIVE ways to fall asleep! Boring, now that will do it. Routine... there's another one. Ho-hum, helps... Dull, repetitive, lacking color, blaa.... blaaaaa, black sheep, one, two, three...
And, before you know it... nighty nite
