I had lap band surgery a year ago... it is a band that goes around the top part of the stomach and can be adjusted to allow more or less room. There is a port that the doctor can inject and remove saline which loosens or tightens the band. I have lost 75 pounds with it. It is less invasive than tradional stomach stapling and I only have 3 tiny scars. It does not provide as drastic weight loss as the stomach stapling, however, depending on how much weight a person has to lose, it can be very effective.

JP gave you a great answer with lots of good information. He is right that they no longer do the "tummy staple." I just want to add that my husband had the gastric bypass done about 4 years ago and is doing fine today. He has kept off his weight and is able to eat any steak he wants without any problems. I remember my brother telling him he could no longer eat hamburgers and the two of them went out for hamburgers last week. I don't know where people get these stories from. He did have the lapband done first before the gastric bypass. It had to be removed because it was nothing but trouble for him. It slipped and cause many problems for two years before it was finally removed. The gastric bypass worked out fine.

Gastric LapBand is when they put a rubber band so to speak around your inner stomach and tighten it every so often to make your stomach smaller, to control the amount of food you take in.

Approved by the FDA in 2001, LapBand® Surgery is the safest and least invasive bariatric surgery for weight-loss patients. The LapBand® is a small, inflatable belt placed around the upper portion of the patient's stomach that functions to restrict the amount of food consumed, slow the emptying of food from the stomach, and provide a constant sensation of being "full." Like our other weight-loss surgeries, Laparoscopic Associates' gastric banding surgery is a minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery. Operating time is about 60 minutes and most patients are ready to leave the hospital the following day.

don't know, but it can't be anything like the surgery....a part of the stomach is bypassed and there are problems with absorption and organ failure.
