Ask yourself this first, before you dump the dog.....

Has your dog ever displayed any aggression towards other people, children or adults?

If he hasn't then consider this, pit bulls can be very lively and active. This is not a bad trait. If you want a more calm and submissive dog, you need to take the dog for a WALK, everyday or at least 5 times a week.

Its as simple as that. This is a breed with a purpose. And walking him gives him purpose.

If he has shown aggression you may want to seek a trainer and most definitely take him for a walk and I mean a good brisk walk where he will get tired. When you master the walk, you will master the dog.

As far as the baby, you need to very slowly introduce him to the baby with you holding the baby in your arms and he smelling the baby at a distance.

He should not be allow in the baby's room at all. You will have to make clear boundaries between the baby and dog. Do not tolerate excited behavior from the dog when the baby is around. If he does correct it immediately.

I think you will be fine having your baby and dog grow up together. As long as the boundaries are clear to your dog, he will be fine.

I have 4 kids and have had pit bulls in the home with every single one of the kids from the time they were brought home from the hospital. We have had over 20 pitbulls. All were excellent with everyone.

There is no need to get rid of you dog just because you have a baby.
Training would probably be a good thing. Call around and make sure you get someone that is not afraid of Pits.
Try getting a dog cage, too. Not a metal crate, but one with the plastic sides. It will feel like a den. You can cage the dog up when the baby is having floor play or just when the dog is getting to hyped up.

And make sure to take the dog out for plenty of exercise each day. Load the baby in a stroller and go for a walk with the dog, too. Dog gets rid of some energy and spends time with you while you are spending time with the baby, too.
hope that helps.

You are responsible for both your baby and your dog. Your first responsibility is to your baby, which is part of yourself. As the baby grows older and begins to mature, it will want to explore everything possible and since he or she will not be old enough to understand what he or she is dealing with, will not know how to handle or what precautions to take, around an animal or most things. That's where you come in, to protect and care for your baby above all else, including youself. You can not afford to take chances. You can not predict what an animal will do, especially one that is hyper. The dog may not even mean to hurt the baby but may do so, in just a normal reaction to a poke in the eye or taking his food. Then if he bites or harms your baby, you could be in alot of trouble with the authorities and your animal could possiblly be put down; and your baby could have suffered greatly. You can prevent all of this from happening. It would be better to put off having a pit bull until your child can be taught how to deal with an animal and at the least, you should get a dog that is small and a breed known for being good with children which would not maul your child and cause such suffering. You can always have a pit-bull once your child is much older, especially ones that are so nervous and quick to act. Besides, all good parents should put their child's safety, protection, and needs before their own. You would not want to carry the guilt if something did happen to your child, when you could have prevented it.

I have three pitbulls, and two children, don't alienate your dog, he is competing for your attention now, if you can share your time between the two and involve him with the baby, he will become the baby's protector.People think all pits are bad because of how some are raised, if you love the dog it will love you back, they are not EVIL, Viscious creatures unless you make them that way! Getting a crate to put your dog in when the baby is on the floor or when you need a break, is a great idea, My kids grew up with our pits, pulling on ears and tails and pulling up on them when they were first learning to walk, they understand it's a baby, they are not stupid dogs.Definately think about a crate and/or obedience training though. The dog and baby will be fine growing up together, and your child will have a wonderful playmate as it gets older.

Suddenly making the dog stay outside and treating him like the proverbial red headed step child would be no fair to the dog and he won't understand and turn on you for it. You do need to keep the dog away from the baby though and the only way to be fair to your child AND the dog is to find him/her a new home with people who know how to handle a pit bull. It's not the dogs fault that you had the baby, so please do the right thing.
You can even take out a free ad on petfinder.com, if you decide to go that route. Just make sure you charge for the dog so it has a chance to not end up with people who will want to use it for fighting.

Hellooooo!!!!! Get rid of the dog. They are to temperamental with adults let alone a infant. We had 4 pit bull attacks within two weeks here. The cops tried everything finally had to put them down. They were jumping the 6ft fence going after one guy, the other jumped in a dumpster the dog had him pinned there. I'm sorry I know the puppy is your baby and you have had it for more then 5mts but the child is your flesh and blood, your responsibility to care for it. You might be able to find a rescue center for him. I wish you the best and I don't mean to sound cold I have just seen what they do to people unprovoked first hand it is not pretty.

Pit bulls are very good dogs to have around kids, not babies. You might consider giving the dog away and getting another in a few years or keep the dog outside and away from the baby.

Any hyper dog around a baby is not good. How old is the dog and have it been to training? You can't tell what a dog is going to like around your baby by its breed. A friend of mine borrows my pit to put in her yard when her little neice comes to her house. He dose not even jump on her and wouldn't let a stanger in the yard when the little one is out. Your dog may calm down as it gets use to the baby. Just keep a eye on the two.

Ok.. before you give up on your dog consider going to obedience. Pit bulls are GREAT dogs, and are great with children, I don't care what anyone says. Enroll your dog in obedience, and learn how to work with him. Believe it or not, there are things you do to provoke him to be hyper. If you can't handle him and the baby, since both are family members, then you will have to give him up, or something around that area.

Your child is small. Babies like to poke and pull. I would put my doggy outside and keep it away from the baby until you can teach your child how to act around dogs. Doggy manners....lol
I had pit bulls around my kiddies. But after I had my babies I put the dog out so nothing could ever happen. They would pull on his fur and stuff...
☺
