Not positive about the Gnostic tradition----but normally, self-realization means realizing that you are not separate from God. It means realizing that God dwells within each and every one of us. We are all connected and part of the whole.
Self-realization and enlightenment are the same.

The word 'gnostic' is itself quite complex and its definition far elusive (see link below).
So we may try to see what could be "self realisation" even apart from this gnostic tradition (because, in itself, self-realisation is enough of a 'mystic' word ! and also, traditions really should not matter if this 'self realisation' is a genuine pursuit.
Our awareness of 'self' is generally the experience of oneself within the limitations of one's physical body. When one is experientially free from this limitation and can experience oneself in full conscious awareness quite distinctly apart from one's own body, it is said that such person has realised 'who really he / she is' ! That should give at least a symbolic reference (given the limitations of verbal communications!).

In ANY tradition --regardless if it's Gnostic or otherwise-- NOTHING could be better than 'self-realization'.
It IS YOUR FIRST of a series of Epiphanies...
Peace be with you!

This is just MY way of wording it, but for ME self realization, or Self realization, means not just thinking or believing but EXPERIENCING that there is only One Thing, aka the Divine, and I am a part OF that and not apart FROM it. I think its what Moses and Jesus and Muhammad and others really meant when they said "I AM ... " They knew what they were saying. ;-) ~ Peace & Blessings ~
