DUBLIN, Calif. - Audra Schmierer's Social Security number really gets around. It has been used by at least ( 81 ) people in 17 states, most of them probably illegal immigrants trying to get work.
The federal government took years to discover the number was being used illegally, but authorities took little action even then.
"They knew what was happening but wouldn't do anything," said Schmierer, 33, a housewife in this affluent San Francisco suburb. "One name, one number, why can't they just match it up?"
Schmierer realized she had a problem in February 2005, when she got a statement from the IRS saying she owed $15,813 in back taxes — even though she had not worked since her son was born in 2000.
People used her Social Security number from Florida to Washington state, at construction sites, fast-food restaurants and even major high-tech companies. Some opened bank accounts using the number.

What they want to do, with the help and aid of the American government, is to neutralize the situation without regard to how we get hurt.
As I was told last night, We are here in numbers and there's nothing you can do about it so deal with it.
If there numbers count, why does my countrymen's numbers don't count? 80% want deportation and will pay for it.
Oh, and I was the victim of identity theft, not much a number of small transactions totaling just over 200 dollars, about a dozen of them. When my bank told me it would cost $20 for each transaction to my money back, I closed it right then and their. I failed to convince them at the bank I don't know how to speak Hebrew as all the transactions were in that language.

"What started as a hassle turned into a major headache earlier this year when she sought work through a temporary agency that learned her Social Security number had been used by a woman in Texas two years earlier. The agency could not hire Schmierer for more than a month while the situation was clarified.
"How do you prove that you are you?" Schmierer said. "It's like you are guilty until proven innocent."
While returning from a trip to Mexico with her husband last year, Schmierer was detained for four hours in a Dallas airport by immigration officials. The reason: a woman using her Social Security number was wanted for a felony. "
I think it is not harmless. I can't believe the Senate wants to give people who do this Social Security benefits as a reward.

Yes, I read this article today, too. I was also amazed that when the police tracked one of the persons down who had been using the woman's SS#, he wasn't even arrested but was let go after he said he had bought the SS card. Why don't they arrest these people when they actually find them??!! and then deport them immediately! They know they are committing theft when they buy these fake SS#s! This is a very serious crime and it should be treated as such! Same as theft or embezzlement! Charge, prosecute and deport and put a criminal record on the person who committed the crime!

I dont think its right and its very illegal. I wonder if it has been used so many times why it took so long for someone to catch on. Seems kinda neglectful of the government to let it happen in the first place let alone that many times. And the fact that they did little to stop the matter. Identity theft is very real and it hurts people ...some of who dont realise its happening till they try to go buy a home for thier family....its very sad that we have a system that is suppose to be there to identify us but allows others to take the same identity.

I think the legal penalty for stealing someones social security number should be the same as embezzling from their bank account. Not only are they stealing your identity but they steal the tax dollars from us all. If they do not pay the taxes, then we pay more taxes. SS# give fake names & allow people to work without paying taxes because they are in country illegally. ( Thus the immigration tie )

Just terrible. These people are callous thieves. they enter America without a care in the world and act as if America is so big no one will notice. They are out only for themselves and cry when America says enough is enough. They are quick to call others racist but defend their actions by saying there are no opportunities in Mexico, like America should have to pay the price of a corrupt governments bad decisions.

I think more can be done. The U.S has the most problem with simple issues. Immigration is one of them. My thoughts are this: If you want to come over here, thats great. Just do it legally. But with our wack government, its too easy to get over here with out doing it legally. As for immigrants using other people SSN, well when the government decides to act, it will be too late. Then all HELL will break loose.

Ignorance and lawlessness is the only life they know. Why in the world would it take so long for them to track down ONE social security number? We have major problems with these illegals. The day is going to come when people are going to start taking the law into their own hands, if we can't get those we pay out of our taxes to do their jobs.
Illegal immigrants are criminals, deliberately give birth to babies (anchor babies)to get to stay here, abuse our welfare system (food stamps,AFDC) receive housing subsidies, free medical care, protest our country for rights they don't have, fly their Mexican flag above our own, which is an act of war, disrespect our flag, our leaders, our anthem, our citizens, claim land that the USA fought a hard war for and won, then paid money for to the tune of $15 million which the Mexican leaders AGREED on, bring in diseases the USA had eradicated in our population, caused the closing of hundreds of hospitals due their abuse of the EMTALA law, use forged or stolen social security cards, get paid in cash so it won't all be reported, send their money OUT of the USA robbing our economy of the revenue, bring in illegal drugs, gangs, crime, grafitti, trash our neighborhoods, take jobs for slave wages that Americans WILL do (and HAVE done, for a living wage),causing wages to plummet, take factory jobs Americans want, refuse to learn English, refuse to assimilate, get education for their children and teach their children to support MeCha and La Raza and teach them that they are entitled to "Aztlan" (NOT!!).....
and our government wants to allow them to become LEGAL!!!!????? WTF!!

Yeah it is harmful to the American citizen who has to fight to prove who they are. This is just another plain example of Illegal immigrants who misuse the government. And our government officials are in full support of this blatant criminal act.
