I worked at an animal hospital for several years in college and have never actually seen lice on a dog. It could be fleas (small, dark in color, and hop), and if so, one of the flea meds online (Frontline, Advantage, etc) will work well. It is also possible that your dog has mange. This is a small parasite (silimar to a louse) that lives under your dog's skin and causes irritation, chewing, fur loss and a rash. However, if it is mange, you will not be able to see bugs in the fur - they are too small. If this is the case, the vet will need to prescribe meds. Also, if you suspect it is mange, see the vet soon...it can spread among animals quickly.

If it is indeed lice, a bath in a pyrethrin shampoo should kill them right away. I'd have a vet check to make sure that it is actually lice that you're treating for.
