Look in the papers for a breeder and make sure to visit the litter before picking a dog so you know that the breeder isn't in-breeding. Also, find out if your area have a golden retriever rescue league because they are generally very good at placing the right dog with the right owner.

Most cities have rescue teams just for Golden Retrievers. I have adopted 3 goldens like this and they are all three wonderful animals with great personalities.

Try the "Pets" section in the classifieds of your newspaper, or look for one at your local animal shelter. Be warned, though---Golden Retrievers are big dogs and need lots of room to run in order to be happy and healthy! If you live in an apartment, or have a small yard, try a different breed of dog.

There's a breed rescue called homeward bound that specialize in golden retrievers.
Lots of shelters either have golden retrievers or will put your name on a waiting list for one.

Golden retriver rescues have great dogs already spay/neutered and vaccinated. Don't get a puppy from a pet store they are usually sick. They come from puppy mills where they are mass bred and are sickly and often die. Also when you buy from a breeder that takes away a home from a dog at a shelter where they may be put to sleep! Try a shelter. They have more pure breed dogs than you would think.
