Runny noses are caused by increased mucus production. This in turn is caused by an irritant like a virus, allergen or bacteria. It's the body's way of disposing of the irritant after the immune system has killed it (in the case of virus and bactrium). Allergies are caused by the immune system thinking something innocent is a threat.
