Wow, a lot of ideas. I wish this thing would let us comment on all the answers.
I personally think most of them don't want to accept our culture. They want the freedoms of the US, but nothing else. Many would rather make it a new Mexico.
Some do learn English. And some learn it and then pretend they don't so as to get over on things.
I think most people wouldn't mind helping legal immigrants learn English. And its good to learn some Spanish just to be a little culturally diverse. But I personally resent having our taxes spent to print IRS and other government documents in languages other than English. That is just a crutch that continues to allow them not to melt into America.
Find some of those bi-lingual accountants, lawyers, etc to help them with the English documents. And when they do finally learn English, they can make 20% more then us because they are bi-lingual and they can help the next wave of LEGAL immigrants.
And for the person who said we don't speak Indian. My grandfather is 100% American Indian. Unfortunately our cultures clashed and we ended up at war. The difference between them and the Mexicans, is we don't collect welfare or free services from the Indians. If we were begging to be part of their reservation, then I think we'd be expected to learn their language and follow their rules.

A lot of minority groups have everything they need in their own language, such as shopping, friends, and even television, which is why some go so long without learning the language. I know a Hispanic person who was born in the USA, but she was born in Spanish Harlem, and as a result has a heavy Spanish accent. I do agree that the first thing one should do in a new country is learn the language. It keeps them from being under a veil, as it were. I mean, I've been to some stores in some neighborhoods where no one spoke English...

How do you know they "won't?" Are you asking a real question, or just expressing some uneducated predjudice?
There are many thousands of Americans who have lived and worked overseas for decades but still don't speak the languages of the countries in which they live, especially in Asia. They presume that if anyone wants to do business with their company, they will learn English. And these people can't even call the police or fire department if they have an emergency.

Why should they ? We have made it easy for them not to . We provide every thing they need in their language . I don't understand why , because they have to speak English to become an American Citizen . I was told by a illegal person , We are staying here only long enough to make money to live on back in Mexico . $10,000 will last a long time there . Things are cheaper . He had a beautiful home , with marble floors and the furniture is all handmade and would cost lots of money here .
They stay together , like 20 renting a house . So the rent is cheap and they don't mingle with us any more then they have to , except to chase girls who have a little money or a good job . So they will help them get a green card or bring relatives here , to make more money .

America does not have an official language any more than it has an official religion.
That said, most Hispanic-Americans do want to learn English. I suggest you try volunteering as a teacher assistant to a community program which teaches English as a Second Language to help those who are inclined to learn the language. You will be surprised how hard some of them are trying to learn.

To begin this country was made of Mexicans and Indians before you were ever born. You are the outsider. And yet when the colonies were originated, they were originated by all immigrants and those original Mexicans and Indians. Your just an idiot for being a bigot, or racist. You don't see me saying that why can't we just put all bigots in a boat and send them over to a remote Island cause they get on my nerves. I accept you cause you are a human being regardless of your opinion of anyone or anything. I fought for you to have that right so just suck it up and live with it. Be happy that you have the privilege to have that god given right and under our constitution. How else would we do business with other countries if we never learned other languages. Think before you ask a stupid question.

Rather than fretting about them, why can't we as English speakers help them to learn the language? Some of them don't even understand the culture. I think we should be more open to the fact that they do the kind of labor we wouldn't be caught dead in most of the time and give them the respect they deserve...and help with English when they need it. Never know, they might learn the language that way too.

It's a combination of laziness and not being required to learn it. When they go to get their drivers license they can take the test in spanish, when they do anything government related, they can do it in spanish when they're working the freakin' drive through at mcdonalds they can speak spanish. It's ridiculous I'm with you on this. I live in the southwest and feel like i live in mexico-I can't stand it!! Being in America, we should have everything in English and English only! If people can't understand it they can go back to their country and speak their native language there.

i completely agree. i would not move to a country if i did not speak the language, or at least have the intent to learn it. i believe it is incredibly disrespectful. there should be a test that those seeking legal citizenship should have to pass, and being able to speak english should be an absolute requirement.
FREEMAN-because they are in america(an english speaking country!) if i move to mexico, i'll be sure to learn spanish!

I completely agree that they should learn English. I can't even get a job in my own hometown because of the fact that they require that anyone who applies for a job has to be at least conversational level Spanish or better.
They came here, why should we cater to them? If we went to Mexico, they wouldn't cater to us, they would expect us to learn the language.
