The Spartans were not only one of the greatest ancient military forces, they are among the greatest of all-time. The Spartans were bred to fight, trained from birth to be tough and strong. Proof of their toughness was shown best in the battle of Thermopylae. Where 300 Spartans led the small greek defence against a massive Persian Army of Around 600,000 led by Xerxes. The Spartans held them of for three days taking more than 20,000 Persians with them. This battle saved Greece from the invading Persians. The Spartans would terrify their enemies with brutality and wore the best armor of the day. Spartans fought with the best equiptment and best leaders. But their lack of education and invention led to their downfall.
