Salaam means peace. It is also a greeting.

As-Salāmu `Alaykum means "Peace be unto you." - it's probably the expression you're looking for.

Remember - there's a difference between a person's religion and his or her native tongue. Catholics wish each other a Merry Christmas in many different languages, and Muslims wish each other peace in many languages as well.

Those who speak Arabic would wish each other As-Salāmu `Alaykum.

Oh - and by the way - the letter "a" in this expression is pronounced as the "a" in "cat", not the "a" in "car".

I highly recommend the discussion from Wikipedia that I've linked below - interestingly, the article notes that it's considered inappropriate for a Muslim to return the Salam greeting of a non-Muslim in full. Read why, and what a Muslim should reply instead in the article.

Urdu is close to Arabic, but most Muslims use Arabic religious expressions for hello and good-bye. When you say hello, you say Salam Alaykum. For good-bye, you say, Ma' assalamah, meaning "go in peace." It is understood that you are talking of the peace and blessings of God.

There's a phrase in Arabic that's well suited, but I don't know what it's called. I do know it translates as 'Peace Be Upon You.'.

I don't think you have to impress your Friend with speech appropriate to his culture. You could ask him yourself or just say what you feel. Be well! God Bless! etc...
