I'm a nurse and I believe not only is it important to have technical skills, we as care givers must also possess compassion, empathy and the gift of touch. I view my patients as a whole being, not just the physical, but also the spiritual.

I've been a nurse for over 11 years and personally I think the most important characteristics are having top notch assessment skills, having empathy (being able to share/understand a person's feelings), and being compassionate. By being able to perform a good assessment, you will find out where that patient's health level is physically, emotionally and psychologically. Then, the empathy and compassion will compel you to give them the complete care they need, and will also help you to be an advocate for them when communicating with the doctors and other medical team members. ALWAYS put your patients first.

Listening, compassion, empathy, and not being judgemental. But watch out that you don't get overly attached to any patient, it will burn you out too quick. It's a great field that needs more people who really care and want to help others. Good luck to you if that is the path you choose.

You must have a love of people, compassion for the ill, elderly, lonely. Care giving is hard work so you must like to work. You need to be reliable, able to meet their needs with a smile and never let them see you out of sorts. It's a great profession and if you do it well, you will find much satisfaction in helping the helpless.

Be kind and listen. Don't have to be a rocket scientist to know
how rude people are today so just be nice, listen and give
uplifting advice. No magic involved here, just be kind.
