Yes, you can call your dog by a different name. Simply stop using the name Buddy, and start using the new name whenever you interact with your puppy. Start with calling his new name out when you put his food bowl down to feed him. You can also get a few small chewy treats, say his name out loud in a sing-song or calling type voice. When he looks at you, give him a treat. Repeat this process through out the day and he will start responding to the new name soon.
Good Luck.

It's a good thing that your dog is still a puppy. Puppies are eager to please and learn. So, if I were you, I would start calling my puppy by the new name that you choose. (Ask your family members to help as well.) Try not using your puppies old name. The more you do it, the quicker your puppy will learn. And each time your puppy comes to you after calling it's new name, reward it with a treat or praise. It will learn! You got to have patience too. Good luck!

I've seen it done before. I learned that it is easiet for a dog to hear a 2 syllable name that ends with an ee sound. Since Buddy fits that bill maybe try to find another that sits along the same lines and it might be easier for the dog to get.

Not a problem at all. They will learn their new name just like people have nicknames. It might not be your name but you know they are talking to you! We have changed the names of adopted dogs quite a few times with no problems at all! Good luck

Since it`s still a puppy you can change his name. I think dogs respond alot to the tone of your voice when you call them. It`s worth a try, Buddy is sort of a lame name !

We adopted a dog at 6 months old and didn't like his name. We changed it and kept using the new name and in just a few days he was answering by the new name.
What if you rescued a dog and didn't know its name? You would have to give it a name and he would learn it. Just change it, it is easier than you think........

Just try calling your dog by whatever name you want to call him and when he comes give him a treat reward. He will soon learn to respond to the name you have chosen especailly if there is food involved!

i recently adopted a dog from the humane society whose name was 'elvis'! i thought that was weird, but the lady that worked there said i could change it no problem. she said that he's getting a new life, why not a new name? his name is 'nimmie' now, (short for nimrod)...he comes to it fine. i really think it's more your tone of voice anyways. good luck
