The Human Race, Black Race, White Race, Asian Race, Hispanic Race, Presidential Race, Mayoral Race, 440 Meter Relay Race, Rat Race...Okay, maybe I misunderstood the question. Race is a construct used to divide and categorize people - usually into groups of 'are' and 'are not', fostering attitudes and thoughts of 'us' and 'them', thereby justifying discriminatory beliefs and practices.

From an anthropological point of view, the entire idea of "races" is rather absurd. For example, there's more genetic variation within Africa than between Africa and non-Africans, if I'm remembering my anthropology professor correctly.
