I have been skydiving many time (in several countries).
You don't say what type of jump you are going for (static line, solo free fall [probably not], AFF, tandem etc) but I am sure you will enjoy it ... perhaps more in retrospect!
The actual jump is a big rush (and, I wont lie to you, scary) but make sure you take in the whole experience from the training to the jump and including watching the DZ world go by.
In response to "does it ever hurt", yes it can but usually only bumps from a spill on landing or a shifting harness (it is supposed to be tight - do not loosen it to make it comfortable).
The most common thing to go wrong is a rough landing but if you listen and practice during training you will be OK ... DO NOT reach for the ground let it come to you! There is always a chance of parachute malfunctions (have been under 2) but if you follow your training then you will be fine ... the risk is much less for you as you are in a far more controlled environment than most jumpers.
Just listen to your instructor; don't second guess what you have been taught; don't adjust the equipment - if it needs done then ask; look all around you all the time; if you don't understand then ask; don't walk in front of planes (respect the fast turn'y things!); get a good nights sleep and, most important, Dutch courage is for idiots ... no drink, no drugs! Jump clean jump safe.
Hpe that gives you some info but if you need more then drop me a note.
Blue skies

Yes it can hurt, from a sprained ankle to a crushing death. There are several different types of parachute malfunctions that can happen, - the instructor will go over them with you - usually they can be worked out in time. But if the main chute does fail, there will be a reserve parachute that will be used. Most importantly and it should be obvious, do WHATEVER your instructor says.
It may feel right and you might have the urge to position your body differently during freefall or landing, but you can get seriously injured if you do not use the proper technique.
Skydiving is awesome and no words can really describe the experience.

My boyfriend and I went about a year ago, and it is one of the most incredible things that I have ever done. This is uncommon, but the chute could get jammed and not open, but that is a very minor chance. I have arthritis in both of my knees, and the landing didn't hurt them at all. You'll love it. I can't wait to go again.

Have fun, I've always thought that it would be awesome to do. The most common bad thing to happen is that you land a little hard and sprain or break your ankle. Occasionally people break their leg. Not much happens besides that.

i was thinking of how to discribe it to you....really there are no words to explain the feeling! once you do it, you will understand. its amazing though....its so fast, and strange when you first jump. and the wind whips your cheeks and makes your mouth all dry. then you open the chute, and its gets really slow, and super quiet. its soooooo beautiful! i did it 15 years ago. i recommend it to everyone. something that everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime.

Reminds me of my army days.
A lesbian WAC who worked in my office lost her girlfriend when both main and reserve parachutes failed to open.
Can't blame anyone else for the accident, though -- she folded it herself.
