There are many mastiff breeds, but I'm guessing you mean either an English or bull mastiff. I've had both. Both are great dogs in the right home.

English Mastiffs are VERY, VERY large. You may know this, but really think it through. They are turned into rescues because they "got too big"! They slobber, buckets and buckets of slobber. They shed. Many people don't realize this because they are short haired, but they do. They can not tolerate high heat. They must be indoor dogs. They have lots and lots of health problems, and are very short lived, sometimes only 6 years! They are not very bright dogs. This can be a good trait, as they don't figure out how to get into anything, but if you are looking for a dog that has a good brain....well, this isn't it. They are pretty lazy, as puppies they can get a little crazy sometimes, but they will not willingly run any marathons. As puppies you need to be careful because too much exersize or the wrong food will cause growth problems. They love almost everyone they see, and are not real protective(as a general rule) They will defend you if they need to, though. They tend to be wonderful with kids and other pets, and although a little slow to respond to commands(takes time to move that big frame) they are generally easy to train.

Bull mastiffs are less drool(not much less) and less size, but more of almost everything else. More active, more protective, smarter(not a genius, but smarter) and just more dog! They are a little harder to train, because they are more stubborn usually, but they are not "hard" to train. They are still layed back enough to be good inside dogs, but they do enjoy a good romp. They are good watchdogs, most are good with people, and good with kids. They are not as good with other dogs, and other pets are only ok sometimes! Some Bullies are aggressive and mean, so be careful when choosing a breeder.

Both breeds are getting more popular and easy to find in rescues. Even if you want a puppy, contact a rescue for more info. They work with these breeds daily, and are more than honest about their bad traits. I love both breeds, and am currently looking for an English puppy. Be sure to do your research, because a mastiff can be the best dog you ever had, or the worst!!

mastiff is more of everything u want from a dog wen making one part of ur family! love, company, friend, protection, and sloppy doggy kisses in the biggest size made available! I've owned bullmastiffs &english for 12years now. currently hav 3 english. 8 1/2year male who is an akc retired champion stud& family pet, still healthy &active as any puppy, very protective of home &family but at park or on a walk super friendly. he has moved to my mothers who is a single woman, he behaves all the same. i recently purchased a male now 6months also a female now 5month puppies, both english and training is so easy if u have experience or professional tips. just don't expect silly dog tricks from them like sit pretty or roll over, basic is best.
with bullmastiff the pet is a lot similiar but they do get abit more rowdy or hyper wen excited &wont be as big or messy like slobber/shed. both need to be family members tho so indoor pets. need as much excercise as owner does. english much smarter I say

I grew up having a bull-mastiff and she was a sweetheart. I only heard her bark when she wanted to eat an ice cube from the freezer. She lived until she was about 12 years old. She was very friendly with me and my little brothers and little sister (they would always climb all over her and she didn't care). I'm not sure about just a regular mastiff, I'm sure they are great though.

I had a Bull Mastiff .... Very loyal, loving, well tempered dog. A bit of a crush when he sits on your lap though. They don't live very long in comparison to smaller breeds. I've had 2 Boxers as well, they're similar in character but more excited about life, they are my favourite breed .....

Yes, I have a bullmastiff named Sandy...120 lb. of pure love. Very good with children, and as friendly a dog as anyone could ask for. In my opinion, one of the best dogs around for a family to have.

I don't but my friend does. It is very friendly especially around kids. You wont believe it but as big as she is she is a little chicken. It's too funny. I have always heard that bigger dogs pay more attention to being gentler with kids. But thats just hearsay.

my friend has two. the female weighs 180 the male over 200. they are gentle giants! massive dogs, that think they are small lap dogs. they love to try and lay on you and want to be loved on all the time. two things that i dont like about them...they slobber A LOT!! and when they shake their heads the slobber goes flying...its gross! slobber spots on the wall has to be cleaned off every day, and the furniture has to be cleaned all the time. and when they wag thier tails, and it hits you..it hurts! but they are very good with kids, and are good guard dogs. no one wants to mess with a dog that big!

If you have your own house and don't invite any friends over than you can get one. Those dogs require all protein diet so if you are a vegeterian don't even think about(just kidding).

I have one. It takes a while to gain their trust but once you do, they're great dogs. But they're also very protective.
