What is a Gothic?

I thought it was a type of novel or a branch of the Germans. But what does it mean here on YA?

Goth is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries around the globe. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture is remarkable for its longevity compared with others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities show influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly by way of horror movies.

The goth subculture has associated "gothic" tastes in music and fashion. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a “dark” sound. Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, Victorian, androgynous, some Renaissance style clothes, combinations of the above, and/or lots of black attire, makeup and hair.

From what I observed in High School,
They like to dress in black. Black trench coats, black boots, lots of buckles. Girls (and some guys) wear black eyeliner, and lipstick. They dye their hair black, but sometimes white, or neon color. They kinda keep to themselves. But if you talked to them, you discovered they really are people. :o)
They like to listen to Depeche Mode. Have a fascination with Mideivel times. Some think about death way too much, and seem depressed.

Now if they are a religion, that's beyond me. That is just what I remember from high school. I so don't claim to be an expert.
