1. "Example" is used in a quotation: The principal said,"The coach made an example of the boy."
or to emphasize the word as being suspect or a special category. The coach made an "example" of the boy by removing him from the team.
'Example' is used inside a quotation. John told me, "The principal said,'The coach made an example of the boy.' "
Man is noble. Man here mean the human race, singular.
Men are a puzzle. Men here means the male gender, plural.
